The second edition of the Captain Sam Phil-Ebosie Swimming Competition is set to make a splash at Ikoyi Club 1938, bringing together approximately 200 young swimmers from various schools across Lagos State. This inter-school competition, catering to both primary and secondary school students aged seven to seventeen, aims to foster the growth and development of competitive swimming in Nigeria. The competition serves as a vibrant platform for these budding athletes to showcase their skills and compete for honors in a diverse range of 50 swimming events, fostering a spirit of healthy competition and sportsmanship.

The competition is not just about individual accolades; it emphasizes teamwork and overall performance. Trophies will be awarded to the teams that accumulate the highest points tallies, recognizing the collective effort and contribution of each swimmer. However, individual brilliance will also be celebrated, with prizes earmarked for the best-performing male and female swimmers in both the primary and secondary school categories. This dual focus on team and individual achievement underscores the competition’s commitment to holistic development in swimming.

Captain Sam Phil-Ebosie, the inspiration behind this competition, was a distinguished swimmer himself, representing Kings College, Lagos, in competitive events during the 1960s. His passion for sports extended beyond his personal achievements, and he became a prominent sponsor of competitive swimming, tennis, and squash at the club level. Numerous athletes benefited from his generosity, receiving support to participate in local and international sporting meets. This competition, then, is not just a celebration of swimming but also a tribute to Phil-Ebosie’s lifelong dedication to promoting sports and nurturing young talent.

Phil-Ebosie’s commitment to sports philanthropy is further exemplified by his role in coordinating and promoting the Dr. E.I.P Ebosie Swimming Competition, held annually from 2005 to 2010 in honor of his late father. This six-year run of the competition speaks volumes about the family’s ingrained commitment to supporting and uplifting the sporting community. The current competition, organized a decade after his passing, continues this legacy, ensuring that his passion for swimming and his contribution to the sport are not forgotten.

The second edition of the Captain Sam Phil-Ebosie Swimming Competition is a collaborative effort, driven by the desire to honor a man who deeply impacted the lives of many. Friends and family of the late civil aviator have come together to organize this event, ensuring that his legacy lives on through the sport he cherished. Lindsay Afolabi, Phil-Ebosie’s daughter and a member of the organizing committee, expressed her family’s joy at seeing their father’s passion for swimming being perpetuated through this competition. Their involvement reflects the personal and emotional significance of the event, transforming it into a heartfelt tribute.
