The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has issued a strong warning to electorates ahead of the upcoming general election scheduled for December 7, 2024. In a press release, the Coalition encourages voters to resist any offers of inducements from political parties and candidates. This initiative stems from a commitment to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that voters can express their rights freely during the polls. CODEO’s emphasis on the need for voters to exercise their democratic rights without external pressure is fundamental for maintaining a fair and transparent electoral environment.
Recent observations by CODEO during a Special Voting exercise on December 2 have raised serious concerns regarding electoral integrity. Reports surfaced of vote-buying incidents that compromise the authenticity of the voting process. Specifically, in Keta within the Volta Region, CODEO noted that some representatives from political parties were involved in distributing money to voters contingent on their support for particular candidates. Another alarming incident occurred in the Weija-Gbawe constituency of Greater Accra, where individuals believed to be affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were reportedly observed giving cash to voters at the polling station’s entrance in exchange for votes.
In light of these troubling incidents, CODEO has called upon the Ghana Police Service to take immediate and decisive action against any instances of vote-buying. The Coalition expressed its alarm not only at the acts of vote-buying but also at the apparent inaction of some presiding officers and security personnel who were present during these violations. CODEO stressed the need for law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate these cases and ensure that accountability is enforced against those responsible for undermining the electoral process.
Furthermore, CODEO highlighted the importance of intervention from the Electoral Commission (EC) and the National Election Security Task Force. The Coalition urged these bodies to issue clear directives to presiding officers and security personnel regarding their obligations when witnessing electoral offenses. Such measures are deemed essential to prevent the recurrence of vote-buying and other electoral violations during the upcoming general election. CODEO’s proactive stance reflects a broader intention to reinforce electoral integrity and foster a more equitable democratic process.
As the election date approaches, the need for vigilance and adherence to democratic principles becomes increasingly paramount. CODEO’s appeal for voters to reject inducements serves as a reminder of the critical role they play in shaping the future of their governance. By standing firm against electoral corruption and manipulation, voters not only safeguard their rights but also contribute to the overall health of the democratic framework in Ghana.
In conclusion, the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers urges collaboration among voters, political parties, and law enforcement to ensure a free and fair electoral process in the forthcoming general elections. The call to reject inducements and the demand for accountability reflect a collective commitment to preserving the sanctity of the voting process, underscoring the importance of active citizen participation in safeguarding democracy. Ultimately, the success of the electoral process hinges on the ability of all stakeholders to uphold their responsibilities and maintain an equitable environment for fair elections.
