ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) has reinforced its unwavering commitment to safety by certifying 29 professional drivers in Buchanan after they successfully completed a comprehensive two-day Defensive Driving Program. This initiative underscores AML’s dedication to fostering a culture of safety both within its operations and in the wider community. The program equipped drivers with essential skills and knowledge to enhance road safety, aligning with international best practices and strengthening AML’s proactive approach to accident prevention.
The newly certified drivers underwent rigorous training encompassing both theoretical and practical sessions, culminating in a formal certification ceremony. The training focused on instilling defensive driving techniques, emphasizing hazard anticipation, adherence to road regulations, and adaptation to varying road and weather conditions. This holistic approach aims to empower drivers to make informed decisions on the road, mitigating potential risks and ensuring the safety of themselves, their passengers, and other road users. The ceremony was attended by AML management, Liberia National Police representatives, professional trainers, and the graduating drivers, symbolizing a collaborative effort towards improving road safety standards.
Ruth Negash, AML’s Training, Development and Compliance Manager, highlighted the significance of the program in aligning AML’s driving standards with international best practices. She emphasized the company’s commitment to transporting passengers safely and preventing road accidents, underscoring the importance of defensive driving behaviors in anticipating and avoiding hazardous situations. Furthermore, Negash reiterated AML’s zero-tolerance policy towards unsafe driving practices and announced plans for refresher courses for drivers who violate safety regulations. This continuous improvement approach ensures drivers remain updated on best practices and reinforces AML’s dedication to maintaining high safety standards.
The program also emphasizes the role of the certified drivers as safety ambassadors within AML. They are expected to mentor their colleagues, proactively address safety concerns, and contribute to building a robust safety culture within the company. This peer-to-peer approach reinforces the importance of shared responsibility for safety and promotes a proactive safety mindset throughout AML’s operations. By empowering drivers to champion safety, AML aims to create a sustainable culture of vigilance and accident prevention.
Kolisa Freeman, AML’s Fleet Manager, lauded the drivers for their participation and highlighted the broader significance of the program. He emphasized that safety is a shared responsibility, and the certification represents a commitment to AML’s core values of safety, accountability, and excellence on the road. Freeman reiterated that the training goes beyond mere certification; it’s about safeguarding lives, optimizing efficiency, and upholding AML’s high operational standards. He emphasized the importance of applying the learned techniques, vehicle checks, and compliance protocols to protect lives and represent the company responsibly.
Randy Reeves, speaking on behalf of the graduating drivers, expressed gratitude to AML for the opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge. He pledged to implement the lessons learned in their daily work, contributing to a safer driving environment across AML’s operations. This commitment from the drivers themselves reflects the program’s success in fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility towards road safety. The Defensive Driving Program stands as a testament to AML’s continuous investment in safety initiatives, reinforcing its dedication to minimizing accident risks and building a culture of safety awareness that benefits both its employees and the communities where it operates.
