In a recent interview, Emmanuel Otti, the Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Abia State, addressed the controversy surrounding Governor Alex Otti’s position within the party following a disappointing performance in the recent local government elections. Contrary to speculation, Otti asserted that Governor Alex Otti remains an integral part of the Labour Party and continues to lead it. The governor’s appeal to his supporters to vote for candidates they believe would offer effective governance has been misconstrued by some as him encouraging defection from the LP. Otti clarified that this statement was meant to empower voters to make personal choices rather than a directive to abandon the party.

The chairman also defended the Labour Party’s decision to field candidates in the local elections, suggesting that their defeat should not be interpreted as a failure to offer viable options. He illustrated this point with analogies from everyday life, emphasizing the notion that the electorate should have the freedom to choose candidates regardless of party affiliation. This, according to him, reflects a democratic entitlement that Governor Otti was simply reinforcing by advising voters to select those candidates they believe would prioritize development and public welfare.

Addressing rumors that the LP may merge with the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Otti vehemently dismissed such claims, emphasizing that they are baseless. He argued that, under Governor Otti’s leadership, the Labour Party has solidified its presence in Nigerian politics, becoming a recognizable entity across the nation. The LP has developed a distinct identity, one that is far removed from the ZLP, and the governor’s status as the only Labour Party governor in Nigeria further strengthens the LP’s profile.

Looking ahead to future elections, Emmanuel Otti discussed strategies needed to regain lost ground at the local, state, and national levels. He acknowledged the necessity of self-reflection and adjustment in response to their recent electoral defeat. Drawing a parallel to biblical teachings, he suggested that learning from past missteps is essential for growth and future successes. By reevaluating their past strategies and understanding the electorate’s preferences, the party aims to enhance its performance in subsequent elections, emphasizing resilience in the face of challenges.

Otti also addressed concerns about the implications of the party’s recent losses, clarifying that setbacks in politics should not be viewed as permanent defeats. He pointed out that, like life’s tribulations, political outcomes can be transient, and the Labour Party remains committed to reevaluating its strategies without succumbing to despair. Otti underscored the importance of resilience, stating that adverse seasons do not warrant giving up but rather require a recalibration of tactics for future endeavors.

Finally, amidst these challenges, Otti reassured party members that the Labour Party is determined, focused, and divinely guided. He encouraged a steadfast belief in the party’s direction, akin to having faith in a supportive presence, which he ascribed to God. He advised politicians, including opposition members, to engage in constructive discourse devoid of malicious intent, suggesting that criticisms should be delivered thoughtfully and purposefully. Highlighting the divine nature of governance, he asserted that those anointed for leadership cannot be easily undermined, implying that the Labour Party will continue to thrive regardless of political opposition.
