The Abia State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has recently elected Elder Abraham Amah as its new state chairman during a congress held in Umuahia, the state capital. Amah, who previously served as the party’s Vice Chairman and acting Publicity Secretary, achieved a decisive victory with 1,264 votes against his closest competitor, Olugu Kalu, who garnered 395 votes. The election saw several other candidates including James Okpara, Godwin Okoro, Kingsley Imaga, and Chief Ukwu Rocks Emma vying for positions within the party. The successful election of Amah marks a significant moment for the local party as it seeks to strengthen its leadership and re-establish its influence in the region.

Upon his election, Amah expressed deep gratitude to the party delegates and stakeholders for their trust and support, promising to lead the party with integrity and dedication. He emphasized the importance of reconciliation within the party, vowing to engage with members who may feel aggrieved and to restore unity among the ranks. Amah articulated a vision of revitalizing the party by re-emphasizing the ideals of its founding members and working diligently to bring back former members who had left. He characterized this moment as a “new dawn” for the Abia PDP, indicating a fresh start and an opportunity for growth and revitalization.

The election process was officiated by the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who served as the returning officer. He praised the peaceful conduct of the delegates, highlighting that it contributed to a smooth election process. Ewhrudjakpo congratulated the newly elected officials and expressed optimism about the party’s future, remarking that the harmony displayed in the Congress is indicative of the PDP’s readiness to reclaim its position of power in the state by the year 2027. His comments underscored a shared commitment within the party to prepare for future electoral challenges.

In addition to the Returning Officer’s remarks, Senator Austin Akobundu, representing Abia Central Senatorial District, also commended the delegates for their orderly behavior during the election. He emphasized the significance of the Congress as a demonstration of the party’s democratic principles and transparent processes. According to Akobundu, an election naturally leads to a singular winner for each position, serving as a reminder for those who win to be inclusive and collaborative in their leadership. He encapsulated the spirit of teamwork by stating that the winners ultimately represent everyone in the party, which is crucial for fostering unity and collaboration moving forward.

Former Commissioner for Information in the state, Chief John Okiyi-Kalu, called upon the new executive members to adopt a singular mandate focused on re-engaging with former party members. He stressed that the new leadership would play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the PDP in Abia State, particularly in addressing the grievances that led some members to leave. Kalu urged the new leaders to prioritize efforts aimed at healing divisions within the party and promoting inclusivity. His call to action reflects the urgent need for effective communication and outreach to reintegrate disaffected members into the party fold.

Overall, the successful election of Elder Abraham Amah as the state chairman of the Abia PDP represents a pivotal opportunity for the party to rebuild and strengthen its foundation. With Amah’s commitment to reconciliation and unity, coupled with the support of established party figures like Senators Ewhrudjakpo and Akobundu, the prospects for revitalization and restoration seem promising. As the newly elected leaders set their sights on upcoming electoral battles, their ability to foster a collaborative environment and address the concerns of current and former members will be essential for the party’s resurgence in Abia State.
