Pensioners in Abia State have expressed concerns regarding the arrears of gratuity owed to retirees and are urging Governor Alex Otti to reconsider his recent decision concerning an agreement made with the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP). The Concerned Abia Pensioners group has pointed out that while the unpaid gratuities were not accumulated during Otti’s administration, they believe he should demonstrate compassion by addressing these outstanding payments, similar to the actions taken to settle salary arrears. They are open to receiving these gratuity payments in installments, emphasizing the importance of this financial support for public servants.

In a statement released in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, key members of the Concerned Abia Pensioners, including Secretary Stanley Ibekwe, Chairman John Kalu, and Coordinator Chief Emeka Okezie, articulated their concerns. They highlighted their appreciation for the regular and full pension payments they have been receiving while simultaneously calling attention to the issue of gratuity. The group noted their disappointment with the NUP’s failure to consult them in their agreement with the government and expressed optimism that Governor Otti might reconsider his stance on the matter.

The group formally apologized to Governor Otti for the misinformation propagated by the leadership of the NUP, which they claimed misrepresented his government and actions. Their statement underscored the significance of gratuity, asserting that it represents the culmination of a public servant’s career, merited after years of dedication. They urged the governor to act with compassion and acknowledge the entitlement of retirees to their gratuities, which should be honored irrespective of the political circumstances under which they arose.

Additionally, the Concerned Abia Pensioners took the opportunity to hold the leadership of the NUP accountable for their alleged failure to represent the interests of all pensioners adequately. Ibekwe noted that the NUP leadership had historically shut out dissenting voices within the pensioner community, effectively preventing them from engaging in discussions regarding their rights and the issues they face. He highlighted a history of exclusion, claiming that members supporting Otti during previous struggles were ostracized and left to conduct meetings in unfavorable conditions.

The pensioners insisted on the need for unity and cooperation within their ranks to ensure that their demands are heard and addressed by the state government. They expressed concern that divisive tactics employed by certain factions within the NUP have hindered progress and improvement in the condition of retirees. This situation has fueled frustrations among pensioners who feel that their legitimate grievances are being overlooked due to internal politics within their organizations.

Through their appeal, the Concerned Abia Pensioners are not only seeking clarity on their own situation but are also advocating for a more inclusive and representative leadership within the NUP. They hope that by voicing their concerns and emphasizing the importance of gratuity payments, Governor Otti will recognize the need for compassionate action and fairness towards all retirees in the state, ultimately working towards a resolution that acknowledges their contributions and sacrifices to public service.
