The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has pledged unwavering support from his administration to ensure the safety and security during the forthcoming Africa Military Games, scheduled to take place in Abuja from November 18th to 30th, 2024. This assurance was made during a courtesy visit from high-ranking military officials, including Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, Major-General Maikano Abdullahi, the President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa, and members of the Local Organising Committee. Wike emphasized the significance of the Games, expressing confidence that more than 3,000 attendees will inevitably contribute to the positive image of Abuja and Nigeria, showcasing the region as a safe destination.

In his remarks, Wike asserted the potential impact of the Games, which he believes will not only highlight the safety of the FCT but also positively influence perceptions of Nigeria on an international scale. He stressed the importance of providing tight security measures to manage the influx of visitors during the event. The minister reiterated the collective effort needed between his government and the local organizing committee, along with other security agencies, to ensure a seamless experience for all participants and attendees, claiming that their presence in Abuja will turn them into ambassadors who will spread the word of the city’s safety and amenities.

Wike commended the military for taking the initiative to host such a significant event and highlighted the potential benefits for Abuja and Nigeria at large. He articulated his commitment to support the military’s objectives, emphasizing that the Games provide a unique opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s hospitality and capability as a host nation. He expressed optimism that the international visitors will leave with favorable impressions, thereby enhancing Abuja’s reputation as among the best cities in Africa and affirming Nigeria’s progress on various fronts.

Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa echoed Wike’s sentiments, pointing out that hosting the Africa Military Games is a critical step in showcasing Nigeria’s dedication to regional peace and security. According to Musa, the Games will facilitate international competition, allowing African armed forces to engage with each other, share best practices, and foster relationships that will bolster continental security. He emphasized that this initiative plays a vital role in Nigeria’s strategy to strengthen regional ties and contribute to overall stability.

The Chief of Defence Staff further highlighted the multifaceted advantages of hosting such an event, including economic growth, sports development, global recognition, and an enhanced sense of national pride. Musa expressed appreciation for the support of the federal government, particularly President Bola Tinubu, underlining that the military’s capabilities as a host nation will shine through during the Games, further reflecting Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and collaborative security efforts within Africa.

Moreover, Major-General Maikano Abdullahi, representing the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa, shared that there is significant interest from multiple countries participating in the Games. Currently, 42 countries have expressed intentions to partake, with 27 nations already submitting their entries, including neighboring countries like Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Abdullahi’s announcement underscores the Games as a significant unifying platform for African nations and a testament to Nigeria’s efforts in fostering intra-continental cooperation through sports, further enhancing Abuja’s status as a prominent host city for international events.
