Combating Kidnapping and Cultism: Ondo State’s Proposed Death Penalty and Infrastructure Development
The Ondo State Government, in its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens, has taken decisive steps to address the escalating threats of kidnapping and cultism. Recognizing the gravity of these criminal activities and their detrimental impact on public order, the government has proposed a stringent measure: the death penalty for convicted kidnappers. This decisive action underscores the government’s determination to eradicate these menaces and restore peace and tranquility to the state.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, announced this significant development following a state executive council meeting presided over by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. The proposed legislation will soon be presented to the State House of Assembly for deliberation and enactment. This move signals the government’s commitment to strengthening the legal framework against kidnapping and cultism, sending a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated.
The death penalty proposal is not merely a punitive measure but a strategic deterrent aimed at curbing the rising tide of kidnapping and cultism. The Executive Council has approved two major dual-carriageway road projects, recognizing the pivotal role of infrastructure in driving progress and development. The first project involves the construction of a 24.75-kilometer dual carriageway linking Ugbeyin Junction, Okitipupa Market, OAUSTECH, Ugbonla Junction, and Igbokoda Jetty. This comprehensive road project will feature a 9.3-meter wide carriageway on both sides, a 1.2-meter median, concrete line drains, walkways, asphaltic shoulders in undeveloped areas, a 3-meter utility area, and solar-powered streetlights. The inclusion of modern traffic lights at critical intersections and a reinforced pavement structure ensures the road’s capacity to handle heavy traffic, further enhancing its utility and contribution to economic development.
The second project focuses on the construction of a 6.7-kilometer dual carriageway connecting Supare Junction, Akungba, and Ikare Road in the Akoko area. This project, mirroring the specifications of the first, underscores the government’s commitment to providing uniformly high-quality infrastructure across the state. The emphasis on features like reinforced concrete line drains, walkways, a utility area, solar-powered streetlights, and robust traffic management systems demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to infrastructure development, ensuring long-term sustainability and functionality.
In addition to these road projects, the Ondo State Government is also prioritizing public safety and lighting infrastructure. The Executive Council has approved the installation of 6,000 standalone solar streetlights across the three senatorial districts, with 2,000 allocated to each district. This initiative aims to improve visibility, enhance security, and create a more welcoming environment for residents, particularly during nighttime hours.
