Professor Obiora Okonkwo, a prominent businessman and Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, has formally announced his candidacy for the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025. He is vying for the position under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), aiming to succeed the incumbent governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo. Okonkwo’s declaration took place at his residence in Ire Village, Ogidi, Idemili North LGA, Anambra State, during the inauguration of his provisional campaign council. The event was attended by a large crowd of supporters, party loyalists, and grassroots mobilizers, signifying the official launch of his gubernatorial campaign. His core message revolves around transforming Anambra into a shining example of excellent governance and a prosperous state.

Okonkwo’s vision for Anambra centers on addressing what he perceives as the state’s current shortcomings despite its inherent potential. He highlighted issues such as insecurity, unemployment, ineffective governance, and economic stagnation as obstacles hindering Anambra’s progress. He underscored the need for a shift in direction, urging the people of Anambra to unite behind a common goal of economic revitalization, enhanced security, and improved governance. His campaign platform promises a multifaceted approach to these challenges, encompassing infrastructure renewal, enhanced healthcare, and modernization of the agricultural sector to bolster food security and wealth creation.

A key element of Okonkwo’s strategy to combat insecurity involves strengthening community policing mechanisms and implementing modern security frameworks. He aims to create a business-friendly environment that attracts investment, empowers entrepreneurs, and generates employment opportunities. Recognizing the importance of education and youth empowerment, he pledged to institutionalize “Nkwado Ogalanya (Igba Boi),” a program designed to equip young people with vocational and entrepreneurial skills, preparing them for productive futures. This initiative reflects Okonkwo’s belief in investing in human capital as a driver of economic growth and social progress.

Okonkwo addressed concerns about his perceived newness to the APC, firmly asserting his status as a foundational member of the party. He recounted his significant contributions to the Action Congress and subsequently the Action Congress of Nigeria, predecessors to the current APC, to solidify his claim of long-standing party loyalty. This clarification aims to dispel any doubts about his commitment to the APC and position him as a seasoned party member with a proven track record. He also dismissed the notion of zoning as a critical factor in Anambra politics, emphasizing that the state’s current challenges necessitate competence and experience over sectional considerations. He argued that the focus should be on selecting the most capable candidate to lead the state’s recovery and development, regardless of their geographical origin.

Okonkwo framed his candidacy as more than just a political campaign; he portrayed it as a movement to reclaim Anambra’s potential and provide the leadership its people deserve. He called for collective action, urging his supporters to join him in charting a new course for the state. He promised that together, they would transform Anambra into a beacon of excellence and good governance. This message resonates with the desire for positive change and resonates with those seeking a leader who can effectively address the state’s challenges. He positioned himself as a transformative figure capable of delivering on these aspirations.

Okonkwo’s campaign launch signifies a significant step in the race for the Anambra governorship. His focus on economic transformation, security, and good governance, coupled with his emphasis on youth empowerment and education, provides a comprehensive platform that addresses several key concerns for the electorate. His assertion of being a long-standing APC member seeks to solidify his position within the party and allay any concerns about his commitment. By dismissing zoning as a primary consideration, he aims to broaden his appeal and attract support from all sections of Anambra’s population. The effectiveness of his messaging and his ability to mobilize support will ultimately determine his success in the upcoming election. The race promises to be closely watched as various candidates present their visions for Anambra’s future.
