The All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigeria’s ruling party, has embarked on a significant modernization effort by initiating a nationwide digital membership registration exercise. This strategic move, contracted to Tunmef Global Limited, aims to create a comprehensive and up-to-date database of its members, positioning the party for a stronger showing in the 2027 general elections. The official contract signing ceremony, held at the party’s Abuja secretariat, was attended by key figures including the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma; Governors Bassey Otu of Cross Rivers and Usman Ododo of Kogi; APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje; members of the National Working Committee; and state party chairmen. This initiative signifies a crucial step in the APC’s evolution, leveraging technology to streamline internal processes and solidify its standing in the Nigerian political landscape.

Governor Uzodimma highlighted the importance of embracing digital advancements, emphasizing the global shift towards digital economies, politics, and social order. He lauded President Bola Tinubu’s foresight in championing this digital transformation within the APC. The digital registration, he argued, will not only enhance the integrity of the party’s membership register but also provide accurate data for strategic planning and resource allocation. This move aims to eliminate discrepancies between claimed membership numbers and actual voter turnout, ensuring that the party’s support base is accurately reflected in election results. Uzodimma expressed confidence that the digital platform will solidify the APC’s position as a force to be reckoned with, welcoming competition while remaining focused on organizing and strengthening the party’s structure.

Dr. Ganduje echoed Uzodimma’s sentiments, expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for endorsing the digital transformation agenda. This long-conceived program, finally coming to fruition, marks a historic moment for the APC. Ganduje emphasized the importance of accurate data in political strategy and planning. The digital registration will provide the party with scientific data, allowing for more effective mobilization and targeted campaigns. This move is expected to eliminate potential controversies surrounding membership lists, which can complicate legal proceedings. By transitioning from analog to digital, the APC aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in its operations.

The digital registration exercise will link members’ registration numbers to their National Identity Numbers (NINs), creating a more secure and verifiable database. This integration will provide the party with instant access to detailed member information from any location. Professor AbdulKareem Kana, the APC National Legal Adviser, provided an overview of the project, emphasizing its importance in streamlining party processes. He thanked the party chairman, the chairman of the progressive governors’ forum, and President Tinubu for their support in bringing this project to life. The funding for this initiative was secured internally within the party, demonstrating its commitment to this digital transformation.

This digital registration initiative represents a significant investment in the APC’s future. By creating a comprehensive and readily accessible database, the party can enhance its internal organization, improve communication with members, and develop more effective campaign strategies. This modernization effort is crucial for maintaining the APC’s competitiveness in the evolving political landscape of Nigeria. The move towards digitalization reflects a broader trend in global politics, where parties are increasingly leveraging technology to connect with voters, mobilize support, and manage their internal operations.

The successful implementation of this digital registration exercise will likely have far-reaching implications for the APC. A more accurate and accessible membership database will empower the party to make data-driven decisions, optimize resource allocation, and strengthen its grassroots presence. Furthermore, the integration of NINs will enhance the credibility of the party’s membership data, reducing the potential for disputes and legal challenges. By embracing technology, the APC is positioning itself for continued success in the Nigerian political arena. The move reflects a proactive approach to party management, ensuring that the APC remains a formidable force in the years leading up to the 2027 elections and beyond.
