APGA Lauds INEC for Transparent Anambra South Senatorial By-election, Condemns Attempts at Disruption

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its transparent and credible conduct of the Anambra South Senatorial by-election held on August 16th. APGA National Chairman, Sly Ezeokenwa, expressed the party’s satisfaction during a press conference in Abuja, emphasizing INEC’s crucial role in upholding democratic principles and ensuring the will of the Nigerian people prevails. The successful by-election, according to Ezeokenwa, signifies a landmark achievement for INEC in its pursuit of fostering genuine democratic change in Nigeria. He highlighted the prompt distribution of electoral materials in accordance with INEC guidelines, contributing to the overall smooth conduct of the exercise.

Despite acknowledging the generally peaceful and well-managed nature of the by-election, Ezeokenwa noted attempts by certain actors to disrupt the process through various illicit means. These attempts included acts of violence, abduction of election officials, bribery, and voter intimidation, all aimed at undermining the integrity of the electoral process. The APGA chairman condemned these actions and stressed that the people of Anambra State will not tolerate such blatant disregard for democratic norms. He further criticized those who, despite engaging in electoral malpractice, have the audacity to cry foul, labeling their behavior as hypocritical.

APGA expressed its gratitude to the voters of Anambra South for their impressive turnout and their peaceful, orderly participation in the electoral process. The party’s chairman underscored APGA’s commitment to good governance under Governor Chukwuma Soludo, while asserting their resolve to resist any attempts to undermine the mandate given by the people. The party views the Anambra South by-election as a testament to the ongoing transformation taking place in the state under Governor Soludo’s leadership. This transformation reflects APGA’s broader vision of inclusive progress and renewed hope for a better Nigeria.

While commending INEC, security agencies, and accredited observers for their resilience against intimidation, inducement, and violence, Ezeokenwa stressed the need for accountability. He called for a thorough investigation into the alleged electoral infractions and urged decisive prosecution of those responsible. He emphasized that incidents of hostage-taking, bribery, death threats, and assaults constitute grave attacks on the foundation of democracy and cannot be treated lightly.

APGA’s resounding victory in the Anambra South Senatorial by-election reaffirms the party’s strong foothold in the state and its commitment to delivering on its promises to the people. The party recognizes the importance of upholding democratic values and ensuring that the electoral process remains free, fair, and credible. APGA’s unwavering focus on good governance and its determination to combat electoral malpractice are critical elements in its pursuit of a better future for Anambra State and Nigeria as a whole.

The success of the Anambra South Senatorial by-election, despite the challenges encountered, serves as a testament to the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic institutions. The collaborative efforts of INEC, security agencies, and civil society organizations, alongside the active participation of the electorate, were instrumental in ensuring a credible outcome. The by-election underscores the importance of continuous improvement in electoral processes and the need to address emerging challenges decisively. APGA’s call for accountability and its commitment to upholding democratic principles are vital for strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system and fostering a more robust democratic culture.

The Anambra South Senatorial by-election serves as a microcosm of the larger electoral landscape in Nigeria, highlighting both progress made and challenges that remain. While INEC’s efforts towards enhancing transparency and credibility are commendable, the incidents of electoral malpractice underscore the need for continuous vigilance and strengthened enforcement mechanisms. The by-election underscores the importance of promoting a culture of peaceful and respectful engagement in the political process, devoid of violence, intimidation, and other forms of electoral misconduct. The collective responsibility of all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and the citizenry, is crucial in safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring that elections truly reflect the will of the people.
