APM Terminals Liberia Ltd. celebrated the fourth anniversary of its educational scholarship program, a cornerstone of its corporate social responsibility initiatives, on July 16, 2025. The program, launched in 2021, underscores the company’s commitment to fostering educational development within its host communities by providing financial assistance to 120 bright but underprivileged students annually. The scholarship recipients are carefully selected from six partner schools spanning Districts 13 and 14 in Monrovia, Liberia: Freeway Baptist School, God’s Missionaries Academy (formerly Boakai Konneh Foundation School), Jimmy Jolocon School (Junior and Senior High), God’s Glory Primary School, Rev. Peter Amos George Memorial Academy, and Mother Kebbeh Academy. Each school benefits from the program with 20 student scholarships, ensuring a consistent and impactful contribution to the local educational landscape. This year’s event was marked by a celebratory presentation of scholarship packages to the beneficiary students at the APM Terminals facility in the Freeport of Monrovia. The company has renewed its financial commitment, investing over 3 million Liberian dollars to cover the students’ school fees, underscoring its dedication to removing financial barriers to education and empowering the next generation.

The core of APM Terminals Liberia’s scholarship program lies in its direct impact on the lives of students and their families. By alleviating the financial burden of school fees, the program allows students to focus on their studies and strive for academic excellence. This initiative addresses a critical need within the community, where many talented students face the risk of dropping out due to a lack of financial resources. The program’s positive impact extends beyond the individual students to their families and the wider community, fostering a sense of hope and opportunity for a brighter future.

Beyond financial support, the anniversary event included a unique opportunity for the students: a guided tour of the APM Terminals facility. This immersive experience provided them with a firsthand look at port operations, including container handling, safety protocols, and logistics coordination. For many of these students, it was their inaugural visit to the Freeport, offering a valuable glimpse into the workings of international trade and its contribution to national development. This exposure aims to inspire students by showcasing potential career paths within the maritime and logistics sectors, broadening their horizons and encouraging them to pursue their academic aspirations.

The event also served as a platform to reiterate APM Terminals Liberia’s commitment to education and its positive impact on the community. Ms. Natasha Akosua Akakpo, Chair of the CSR Committee, emphasized the company’s belief in education as a transformative tool and its pride in sustaining the scholarship program for five years. She highlighted the importance of not only providing financial support but also offering opportunities for students to explore potential career paths, shaping their aspirations for the future. Ms. Akakpo also expressed the company’s intention to expand the program’s reach, either by increasing the number of students per school or including additional schools in the surrounding communities.

The scholarship program’s significance was further underscored by testimonials from school administrators, parents, and students themselves. Mr. Abraham Kawah, Principal of God’s Missionaries Academy, expressed gratitude for the program’s impact, sharing how it had addressed the issue of student attrition due to financial constraints. Mr. Momolu Gartawiah, a parent of a scholarship recipient, spoke of the relief the program provided to families struggling to afford school fees, expressing hope for its continuation. Finally, James, a student beneficiary, shared how the scholarship had been instrumental in preventing him from dropping out of school, emphasizing its life-changing impact and expressing heartfelt appreciation for the opportunity.

The APM Terminals Liberia scholarship program, launched in December 2021, is a testament to the company’s dedication to investing in the future of Liberia. The program prioritizes academically promising students facing financial hardship in communities near the Freeport. The selection of beneficiary schools adheres to both government educational requirements and the company’s internal impact assessment criteria. As the program enters its fifth year, APM Terminals Liberia has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding the initiative and enriching student involvement through hands-on learning opportunities like the terminal tour, further solidifying its commitment to community development and fostering a brighter future for Liberian youth.
