The Tema Metropolitan Assembly recently conducted an engagement session focused on energy transition aimed at equipping its members with the necessary knowledge and insights regarding the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Robert Amiteye, the Coordinator of AbibiNsroma Foundation, facilitated the discussion to raise awareness of the importance of this transition, particularly within industrial cities like Tema, which hosts two prominent oil refineries that are central to Ghana’s economic infrastructure. This capacity-building program not only provided the assembly members with critical information but also encouraged them to share their feedback and concerns regarding ongoing energy-related initiatives.

The oil refineries in Tema are pivotal to Ghana’s economy and play a significant role in the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). However, the reliance on fossil fuels poses several challenges. Fluctuating global oil prices and unstable exchange rates contribute to the increased costs of commodity production, which ultimately affect consumers through higher prices. This reliance on fossil fuels also exacerbates environmental issues, specifically air pollution and the attendant carbon emissions that contribute to global climate change. As part of a broader commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), countries are being urged to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels while adopting cleaner, greener energy production and consumption practices.

Ghana has recognized the necessity for a comprehensive transition towards renewable energy, with a particular focus on increasing its solar power generation capabilities. During the assembly meeting, it became apparent that local legislators required more in-depth knowledge concerning the benefits and practicality of shifting to clean renewable energy sources. The discussion highlighted the concerns related to the accessibility, affordability, and availability of renewable energy technologies that are crucial to meeting the everyday needs of the population and ensuring energy security.

The assembly members acknowledged that the transition towards clean renewable energy presents a unique opportunity for Tema, given its status as Ghana’s foremost industrial hub. This transition is not only beneficial for reducing pollution but also critical for boosting local economic growth. The members identified that with an appropriate strategy, Tema could become a center for renewable energy technology production, thereby attracting investments that would enhance the local economy. The potential for local production would capitalize on Ghana’s natural resources, such as the newly discovered lithium reserves, which are essential for the renewable energy supply chain, to create job opportunities and stimulate further economic development.

Local production of renewable energy technologies could facilitate value addition to Ghana’s rich resources. This initiative would not only address the local economy’s challenges but would also empower communities by creating employment opportunities linked to the renewable energy sector. The assembly members emphasized the necessity of developing policies that support local investment in renewable energy technologies, which could also enhance Ghana’s overall energy self-sufficiency and resilience against global energy price volatility.

In conclusion, the engagement session facilitated by AbibiNsroma Foundation has catalyzed critical conversations among the Tema Metropolitan Assembly members regarding energy transition and renewable energy. The members expressed a collective commitment to pursuing policies that favor the establishment of a cleaner and more sustainable energy future for Ghana. By emphasizing the need for improved access to renewable technology, creating supportive infrastructures, and harnessing local resources, Tema has the potential to lead the way in Ghana’s transition toward a greener economy that is resilient to the challenges posed by fossil fuel dependency.
