Mofifunoluwa Atilola, a rising star in Nigerian junior tennis, showcased her exceptional talent and potential by achieving a remarkable victory against the reigning champion and top-seeded player, Gloria Samuel, in the Girls U-16 category of the CBN Junior Tennis Championship held in Lagos. Atilola, the reigning Girls U-14 champion, displayed an impressive performance from the outset, dominating the match with powerful forehand and backhand winners. Her aggressive play left Samuel, the defending champion, visibly stunned and struggling to keep pace. Atilola’s commanding display earned her a resounding 6-1, 6-4 victory, securing her place in not one, but two finals scheduled for Saturday.

Atilola’s dominance in the first set was evident as she raced to a 5-0 lead, leaving Samuel visibly overwhelmed. Samuel managed to salvage a single game before Atilola closed out the set. The second set followed a similar pattern, with Atilola surging ahead to a 4-0 lead, demonstrating incredible defensive skills and court coverage. Samuel, however, found her rhythm and fought back to level the score at 4-4, momentarily disrupting Atilola’s momentum.

Despite facing a resurgent Samuel, Atilola displayed resilience and composure, elevating her game to secure the final two games, ultimately sealing her victory. The CBN Junior Tennis Championship also witnessed exciting matchups in other categories. In the Boys U-16 final, Gbolahan Olawale from Ondo State was set to face Seyi Ogunsakin from Ekiti State. The Boys U-14 final featured Issah Yahaya against Joel Michael of Lagos State. In the Boys U-12 category, Ogoniba Excellency from Bayelsa State was scheduled to compete against Emmanuel Ogungbe of Ogun State. Lastly, the Girls U-12 final was set to be a contest between Karina Opeune from Bayelsa State and Mabubat Rasaki from Oyo State.

The culmination of the championship, the grand finale, was scheduled to take place at the prestigious Lagos Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday, commencing at noon. This event promised to be a showcase of the brightest young tennis talents in Nigeria, each vying for the coveted title of champion in their respective categories.
