The African University of Communications and Business (AUCB) is poised to celebrate a momentous transformation, marking its evolution from a university college to a fully independent degree-awarding institution. This transition, solidified by the Presidential Charter granted on December 19, 2024, signifies a significant leap forward in AUCB’s journey, solidifying its position as a leading institution in higher education within Ghana and beyond. The official launch of the newly autonomous university is scheduled for February 13, 2025, and will be a four-day extravaganza encompassing a variety of celebratory events designed to showcase the institution’s achievements and future aspirations. This transition not only acknowledges AUCB’s past accomplishments but also underscores its commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and continued growth in the fields of communication and business.
The journey to autonomy began in 2002 with the establishment of the Africa Institute of Journalism and Communications (AIJC) by Hon. Kojo Yankah. Initially offering a Diploma in Communication Studies, the institution quickly gained accreditation as a tertiary institution in 2004. This marked the first step in a series of progressive advancements. In 2007, AIJC achieved another milestone, receiving approval to offer Bachelor of Arts degrees and transforming into the African University College of Communications (AUCC), the first university college in Africa specializing in Journalism and Communication Studies. This specialization positioned AUCC at the forefront of media and communication education on the continent. Further expanding its academic offerings, AUCC introduced Bachelor of Science programs in Business Administration in 2010, broadening its scope and appeal to a wider range of students.
The pursuit of academic excellence continued with the launch of postgraduate programs in 2018, further solidifying AUCC’s commitment to providing comprehensive and advanced education. This expansion into postgraduate studies demonstrates the institution’s dedication to fostering research and producing highly qualified professionals in both communication and business fields. The culmination of these efforts and years of dedication led to the granting of the Presidential Charter in 2024, officially recognizing AUCC’s transition to a fully autonomous university, now renamed the African University of Communications and Business (AUCB). This achievement signifies a new chapter in the institution’s history, granting it the independence to award its own degrees and further shape its academic destiny.
The upcoming launch celebration, scheduled for February 13-16, 2025, will be a vibrant showcase of AUCB’s accomplishments and future vision. The four-day event will kick off with the official launch ceremony on February 13th, followed by a photo exhibition capturing the university’s journey and media interviews providing insights into its future plans. The second day will feature a street activation and float, engaging the community and showcasing AUCB’s presence. The evening will be dedicated to the “Karibu Alumni Homecoming & Recognition Night,” celebrating the achievements of AUCB’s alumni and strengthening the bond between the institution and its graduates. The festivities will continue on Saturday with student presentations, games, music, and entertainment, highlighting the vibrant student life and talent within the university. The celebration will conclude on Sunday with an all-white thanksgiving service at the Evangel Assemblies of God Church in Adabraka, expressing gratitude for the institution’s achievements and seeking blessings for its future endeavors.
Throughout its evolution, AUCB has demonstrated a commitment to fostering a rich learning environment. As a UNESCO Centre of Excellence, the university has established partnerships with institutions worldwide, fostering collaboration and exchange of knowledge. Its membership in the Council of Independent Universities (CIU), Ghana, further solidifies its position within the higher education landscape. To enhance learning and research opportunities, AUCB has established specialized centers and institutes, including the Kwabena Nketia Centre for Africana Studies, the Ama Ata Aidoo Center for Creative Writing, and a Business and Professional Development Center. These centers provide focused platforms for academic exploration and contribute to the university’s overall commitment to providing a well-rounded and enriching educational experience.
The transition to a fully-fledged university marks a significant milestone in AUCB’s history, reflecting years of dedication, growth, and a steadfast commitment to academic excellence. This new status empowers AUCB to further shape its academic programs, expand its research initiatives, and contribute meaningfully to the development of Ghana and the wider African continent. The upcoming launch celebration serves not only as a commemoration of this achievement but also as a platform to showcase the university’s vision for the future. As AUCB embarks on this new chapter, it carries with it a legacy of excellence and a commitment to nurturing future generations of leaders in communications and business. The university is poised to continue its impactful journey, fostering innovation, driving positive change, and contributing significantly to the advancement of knowledge and expertise in its chosen fields.
