The Bauchi State Community Leaders Association (CLA), a unifying body representing non-indigenous communities residing in Bauchi State, Nigeria, held its inaugural Cultural Heritage Day celebration, emphasizing the importance of love, tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and harmonious relationships among all Nigerians. The event, hosted at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi, served as a platform to showcase the diverse cultural tapestry of the non-indigenous communities and to reaffirm their commitment to unity and peaceful coexistence within their adopted home. The CLA President General, Matthew Osochukwu, underscored the warm reception and acceptance that non-indigenous residents have received in Bauchi, irrespective of their ethnic, religious, socio-political, or cultural backgrounds.

Osochukwu expressed gratitude to Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration for fostering a climate of peaceful coexistence among the various communities across the state. He highlighted the cordial and positive relationships enjoyed by the communities under the CLA umbrella, emphasizing the festival’s role in further strengthening these bonds and showcasing their rich cultural heritage. This inaugural cultural festival, a pioneering initiative among all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, signifies the CLA’s commitment to unity, progress, and harmonious relations between non-indigenous communities and the state. It serves as a powerful testament to the peaceful and harmonious coexistence that has characterized their interactions with each other and their host communities.

The CLA President General also acknowledged the Bauchi State government’s dedication to promoting peaceful coexistence and creating a conducive environment for socio-economic and commercial activities to thrive. He commended the government’s achievements in various sectors, including infrastructure development (roads, schools, hospitals), expansion of the water system, improved healthcare access, youth and women empowerment, and the maintenance of peace and security, despite limited financial resources. These advancements, accomplished over the past six years, demonstrate the government’s commitment to the well-being of its citizens.

Mukaila Adeyemi, the guest speaker at the event, lauded the CLA for their faith in Nigeria’s indivisibility and their trust in the Bauchi State Government for ensuring peace and relative security for residents. He praised the association for choosing Bauchi as their permanent home, even amidst security challenges, showcasing their deep affection for the state. Adeyemi highlighted the CLA’s triumph over ethnic prejudice and their ability to transcend suspicion and self-interest, fostering a sense of community and shared belonging. He expressed relief that hope remains for future generations, whose lives are increasingly influenced by technology and digital media.

Adeyemi addressed the growing concern of social media’s influence on youth, noting its potential to erode cultural values and promote dogmatic thinking. He encouraged CLA members to strengthen their unity and mutual support, fostering growth and development within their communities, while upholding their commitment to peaceful coexistence in Bauchi State. His address served as a reminder of the importance of maintaining cultural values and promoting critical thinking in the face of technological advancements.

The Cultural Heritage Day celebration not only showcased the vibrant cultural diversity of the non-indigenous communities but also served as a reaffirmation of their dedication to peaceful and harmonious living within their chosen home of Bauchi State. The event, a first of its kind in Nigeria, underscores the potential for unity and collaboration among diverse communities, setting an example for other states to emulate. It highlights the vital role that cultural exchange and mutual respect play in building stronger, more inclusive societies. The CLA’s commitment to peaceful coexistence, coupled with the Bauchi State government’s efforts in promoting harmony and development, creates a promising future for all residents of the state. The event symbolized a shared vision of a united and prosperous Bauchi State, where diversity is celebrated and harmony prevails.
