The Bissa Development Association (BDA) has issued a strong condemnation of recent violent attacks against Bissa residents in the Kupelgu community, located within the Pusiga District of Ghana. The attacks, allegedly perpetrated by members of the Kusasi ethnic group, resulted in the destruction of numerous homes and widespread fear within the community. Occurring around 10 pm, the assault involved gunmen storming the community, firing weapons, and setting houses ablaze. The BDA characterized the incident as a dangerous escalation of political intimidation and ethnic persecution, posing a direct threat to Ghana’s democratic values. The attacks followed weeks of intimidation tactics, including threatening audio messages disseminated via WhatsApp, warning Bissa residents against supporting their preferred political candidate.
The BDA emphasized the fundamental right of every Ghanaian to political expression, regardless of ethnic background, and denounced the attacks as unacceptable. The association underscored the recent electoral victories of three Bissa individuals who secured parliamentary seats on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket, highlighting the importance of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence within the political landscape. This fact served to counter the narrative of forced political alignment and emphasized the Bissa community’s inherent right to political participation. The BDA stressed that political differences should never be a justification for ethnic violence and called for an end to the ongoing provocation.
The BDA has called for swift intervention by local and national authorities, demanding immediate security measures to protect Bissa residents from further attacks. They also urged a thorough investigation into the incidents, followed by the prosecution of those responsible. Furthermore, the association called for compensation to be provided to victims who suffered property loss due to the attacks. The BDA issued a stern warning that continued attacks would necessitate a defensive response from the Bissa community, potentially leading to an escalation of tensions and wider conflict in the region.
In their press release, the BDA detailed the events leading up to the attacks, including the intimidation tactics employed against Bissa residents. The association reiterated its commitment to democratic principles and condemned the use of political or tribal bigotry. They highlighted the inherent right of all citizens to freely express their political preferences without fear of violence or persecution. The BDA’s call to action included demands for immediate security intervention, a comprehensive investigation, prosecution of perpetrators, and compensation for victims. The association urged all community leaders, government officials, and peace-loving citizens to condemn the attacks and actively promote mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.
The BDA also addressed the apparent contradiction in the narrative of forced political alignment. They questioned how the election of three Bissa members of parliament on the NDC ticket could be interpreted as forced support when it clearly demonstrated democratic participation. The BDA appealed for an end to the destructive actions that threatened the peace and stability of the region, emphasizing the desire of the Bissa people to avoid further conflict. The statement highlighted the importance of respecting the legacy of their forefathers who bequeathed them a peaceful land.
The BDA’s response to the attacks underscored the crucial need for respecting democratic values and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens regardless of their ethnic background or political affiliation. Their call for an end to the violence and a commitment to peaceful coexistence represents a vital step towards de-escalating tensions and fostering a more inclusive and tolerant society. The BDA’s firm stance sends a clear message that violence and intimidation will not be tolerated and that the pursuit of justice and peaceful resolution is paramount.
