The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC), in partnership with the Balmoral Group, launched a three-day training course for boxing referees and judges at the Brai Ayanote Boxing Gym in Lagos. This initiative started on November 5 and is set to conclude on November 7, 2023. Aiming to elevate the standards of officiating in Nigerian boxing, the course features notable Ghanaian boxing official Rogers Barnor as the lead instructor. Barnor, who boasts over three decades of experience officiating at various international levels, brings invaluable expertise to the training. The event is fully financed by the Balmoral Group of Promotions, under the leadership of CEO Ezekiel Adamu, who is supporting all related expenses such as travel, lodging, and allowances for the participants.

NBBofC President Dr. Rafiu Ladipo articulated the importance of the initiative, emphasizing the critical role of quality officiating in the sports’ development. He remarked that good officiating is essential for growth, and therefore, the initiative to bring Barnor to Nigeria reflects the commitment to improving boxing standards in the country. Dr. Ladipo expressed gratitude for the collaboration with Balmoral Group, noting how vital their support is for promoting the sport of boxing. He underscored that without proper officiating, it’s unrealistic to expect any significant progress in boxing, further asserting that this training serves as a testament to the seriousness with which both the NBBofC and Balmoral Group approach boxing in Nigeria.

Rogers Barnor shared his observations of the training’s commencement, expressing pleasure at the turnout and eagerness for increased participation over the following days. He underscored that the ultimate goal of the training is focused on achieving high-quality officiating. Barnor reflected on the historical context of boxing in Nigeria, mentioning legendary fighters such as Charles Nwokolo, Bash Ali, and Samuel Peter, stating that with quality officiating, Nigerian boxing could reclaim its former glory. His affirmative comments instilled hope for participants and highlighted the shared objective of uplifting the standards of boxing in Nigeria.

NBBofC Secretary General Remi Aboderin echoed these sentiments, identifying the training as a pivotal step in aligning Nigerian boxing with international standards. Aboderin emphasized the value of investing in the development of officials, pointing out that the initiative goes beyond teaching rules — it focuses on enhancing decision-making abilities and fostering professionalism in officiating. He expressed optimism that the quality training, provided by Barnor along with the support from Balmoral Group, would yield quick improvements in the overall performance of boxing officials in Nigeria.

Former National Heavyweight Boxing Champion Adewunmi Babatunde also participated and underscored the significance of educational efforts like this training for the growth of the sport. He articulated that the development of any sporting discipline is intrinsically tied to the level of education and training available. Babatunde stressed the necessity of such initiatives to establish a standard for training and maintain ongoing education to further advance the sport of boxing in Nigeria.

Participant Oluseyi George, a referee and judge affiliated with the NBBofC, acknowledged that the interactive components of the course would significantly enhance officiating standards in the country. He pointed out that Barnor, recognized as one of Africa’s premier referees, has effectively addressed many of their inquiries since the training began. The program includes a blend of theoretical and practical sessions, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of officiating principles. Upon completion, participants are set to receive certification which will add credibility to their skill set in officiating within the boxing realm. Overall, the effort reflects a collective ambition to bolster the future of boxing in Nigeria.
