The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC), in partnership with Balmoral Group, has initiated a significant three-day training program aimed at boxing referees and judges at the Brai Ayanote Boxing Gym situated in the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. This training course, which commenced on November 5 and is set to conclude on November 7, features Rogers Barnor, an esteemed Ghanaian boxing official with over 30 years of global officiating experience, as the primary instructor. The training’s funding is fully covered by Balmoral Group of Promotions, under the leadership of CEO Ezekiel Adamu, who has taken care of all logistical expenses, including airfare, accommodations, and allowances for attendees.
NBBofC President Dr. Rafiu Ladipo highlighted the initiative’s primary objective: to enhance officiating standards within Nigerian boxing. He stressed the vital link between quality officiating and the growth of the sport, asserting that poor officiating can hinder development. Bringing in a seasoned official like Barnor is a testament to the commitment being shown towards boxing in Nigeria, as well as the collaborative effort with Balmoral Group to promote and uplift the sport. Dr. Ladipo emphasized that improvements in officiating directly influence opportunities for the sport to flourish, making this training a crucial endeavor for the future of Nigerian boxing.
During the training’s inaugural day, Rogers Barnor expressed his pleasure regarding the substantial turnout of participants. His reaction demonstrates an optimistic outlook for the remainder of the course. Barnor, recognized for his five-star officiating capabilities, underscored the course’s intent to cultivate quality officials who can guide Nigerian boxing back to its former prestigious standing on the international stage. He recalled the glory days of Nigerian boxers like Charles Nwokolo, Bash Ali, and Samuel Peter, establishing a clear vision for revitalizing the boxing scene through quality officiating.
The significance of this training course was further emphasized by NBBofC Secretary General Remi Aboderin, who underscored that enhancing the competency of officials is a vital investment for national boxing. Aboderin explained that the training goes beyond teaching rules, aiming instead to cultivate better decision-making abilities and professional standards among officials. With Barnor’s expert guidance and the backing from the Balmoral Group, he expressed confidence in achieving substantial enhancements in officiating performance, which is essential for elevating Nigerian boxing on the world stage.
Input from experienced professionals within the boxing community reinforces the training’s importance. Former National Heavyweight Boxing Champion Adewunmi Babatunde remarked on the necessity of establishing a high standard of training to foster the development of boxing in Nigeria. He highlighted that educational courses like this one play a crucial role in achieving professional growth and upgrading the quality of boxing in the country. Additionally, participant Oluseyi George, who serves as a referee and judge, noted the immediate benefits of the interactive training sessions, highlighting Barnor’s exceptional teaching style and the wealth of knowledge he imparted.
Overall, the training program comprises both theoretical and practical elements aimed at equipping participants with comprehensive officiating skills. Those who successfully complete the course will receive certification, marking their competence as referees and judges. This initiative represents a progressive step in the effort to elevate the standards of officiating, ensure a brighter future for boxing in Nigeria, and foster an environment where the sport can thrive. Through the dedicated involvement of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, Balmoral Group, and the expertise of Rogers Barnor, the training aims to build a foundation for systematic improvements in officiating, thereby nurturing the growth and development of boxing in Nigeria.
