The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) has publicly addressed the ongoing turmoil within the House of Representatives regarding the potential removal of Speaker Fonati Koffa. Following emerging allegations of bribery aimed at influencing this removal, CENTAL Executive Director Anderson Miamen emphasized the need for lawmakers to act responsibly and foster a positive environment conducive to Liberia’s growth. Speaking on October 24, 2024, Miamen stressed that while CENTAL acknowledges the authority of Representatives to remove elected leaders, the integrity of the process is impeded by the troubling reports of financial inducements being used to sway votes among lawmakers.

Miamen’s remarks come in the wake of reports indicating that certain legislators were allegedly persuaded by financial incentives to support the ousting of Speaker Koffa. This situation has resulted in a faction within the House, which initially counted 47 members seeking Koffa’s dismissal, now dwindling to 43. In contrast, Koffa enjoys the backing of 30 representatives. Despite this backing, his supporters are unable to achieve a quorum to engage in legislative proceedings. Miamen highlighted that the credibility and effectiveness of the legislature depend on its ability to rise above such negativity, asserting that lawmakers must embody integrity and ethical leadership if they hope to be seen as credible agents in Liberia’s democratic governance.

The controversy surrounding the move to unseat Speaker Koffa has shocked many in Liberia, revealing deep-seated issues within the legislative body. The accusations against Koffa, which include claims of poor leadership and conflicts of interest, have intensified criticisms directed at the Speaker. Notably, a significant incident inflating the gravity of the situation involved Gbarpolu County District #2 Representative Luther Collins, who allegedly displayed cash purportedly received as a bribe for facilitating Koffa’s removal. This cash amount was reported to be part of a larger payment of $25,000 intended to garner support from other lawmakers, intensifying public scrutiny of motives behind the alleged coalition against the Speaker.

As the crisis unfolds, CENTAL has reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability in governance. Miamen articulated that members of the legislature possess a duty not only to their political careers but to the citizens they represent, stressing that rumors of bribery jeopardize the moral standing that lawmakers ought to uphold. The call for adherence to ethical standards is integral to restoring public trust in the legislative process, and Miamen remarked that each Representative’s actions should reflect a commitment to the nation’s democratic values rather than personal or factional gain.

Despite the power struggle, Miamen acknowledged the legitimate prerogative of legislators to remove leaders from their positions but insisted that the process must be executed with integrity and fairness. The burden of restoration rests on the Representatives, who must navigate their responsibilities with a focus on the greater good. According to CENTAL, a failure to maintain high ethical standards during such processes not only undermines the legislature but could have far-reaching implications for governance and political stability in Liberia.

In light of the allegations and the growing concern among citizens, CENTAL’s plea for a positive shift in the legislative approach appears critical to fostering a constructive political dialogue. The calls for accountability and ethical leadership echo across various sectors of the Liberian populace, emphasizing that it is imperative for lawmakers to uphold principles that promote transparency and trust. As Liberia grapples with these challenges, the role of institutions like CENTAL becomes increasingly vital in advocating for governance reforms and guiding the legislature toward a more accountable and effective future.
