The Rivers Local Government Elections: A Resounding Success in Security and Voter Participation

The Rivers State local government elections, held on Saturday, have been lauded as a significant achievement in terms of security, voter turnout, and overall conduct. Dr Gabriel Nwambu, Head of Mission for the Rivers Local Government Polls Observation, expressed immense satisfaction with the peaceful and orderly manner in which the elections were conducted. Deploying 330 observers across all 23 local government areas of the state, the mission reported a complete absence of voter intimidation, thuggery, violence, and vote-buying, marking a significant departure from the often-turbulent electoral history of the region. This peaceful atmosphere, coupled with a high level of voter participation, points to a renewed confidence in the democratic process within the state.

Central to the success of the elections was the exemplary performance of the security agencies. Dr. Nwambu specifically commended the police, the lead agency responsible for internal security during the elections, for their professionalism and efficiency. He noted that they were “on top of the game,” ensuring a secure environment for voters to exercise their franchise without fear or coercion. The presence of well-trained and briefed joint task forces at checkpoints, comprising various law enforcement agencies including the military, contributed significantly to maintaining order and preventing any potential disruptions. The strict adherence to rules of engagement by security personnel further underscored their commitment to ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process.

Unlike previous elections where interactions with security personnel might have been challenging for observers, this time, they exhibited a cooperative and helpful attitude. Dr. Nwambu highlighted the marked difference in their conduct, noting their willingness to assist observers and facilitate their movement, provided they maintained a peaceful demeanor. This shift in approach reflects a positive change in the relationship between security forces and election observers, fostering an environment of trust and transparency. The high level of compliance with the restriction of movement order also contributed to the peaceful atmosphere, with young adults observed engaging in recreational activities on otherwise deserted streets, indicating a sense of normalcy and calm during the election period.

The electorate’s enthusiasm to participate in the long-awaited elections was evident in the high voter turnout. Dr. Nwambu observed that people came out en masse to exercise their franchise, a stark contrast to the voter apathy that characterized previous elections. This renewed interest in participating in the democratic process suggests a growing faith in the electoral system and a desire to contribute to local governance. The combination of a secure environment fostered by efficient security agencies and the electorate’s eagerness to participate culminated in what Dr. Nwambu described as one of the best elections in recent times in terms of law enforcement performance and voter engagement.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) also received commendation for its efficient organization of the elections. Dr. Nwambu reported no major complaints against the electoral umpire, highlighting their preparedness and competence in managing the electoral process. The smooth conduct of the elections, with voting commencing around 8:30 am in most polling units and slightly later in a few others, indicates INEC’s effective logistical arrangements and commitment to ensuring a timely and orderly voting process. The absence of significant complaints further reinforces the credibility of the elections and strengthens public trust in the electoral body.

Dr. Nwambu unequivocally endorsed this model of election for Nigeria, emphasizing the peaceful disposition of the electorate, the candidates, and the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission. He underscored the supremacy of the rule of law and the people’s zeal to participate as defining features of these successful elections. The remarkable absence of vote-buying, a common malpractice that often undermines the integrity of elections, was a particularly noteworthy achievement. This positive outcome signifies a potential turning point in the electoral landscape of Rivers State, offering a blueprint for future elections in the region and potentially the nation as a whole. The success of the Rivers local government elections provides a compelling argument for replicating this model, which emphasizes security, transparency, and voter participation, to strengthen democratic processes across Nigeria.
