The 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards, held in the vibrant city of Marrakech, Morocco, celebrated the pinnacle of footballing excellence across the continent. The ceremony, a glittering showcase of African talent, recognized the outstanding achievements of players, coaches, and officials who have graced the football pitches throughout the year. Ademola Lookman, the Nigerian forward dazzling crowds with his skill and precision at Atalanta, clinched the coveted CAF Player of the Year (Men) award. Barbra Banda, the Zambian goal-scoring sensation playing for Orlando Pride, mirrored Lookman’s triumph, securing the CAF Player of the Year (Women) award. South African shot-stopper, Ronwen Williams, guarding the net for Mamelodi Sundowns, was recognized as the CAF Goalkeeper of the Year (Men).

The CAF Awards extended beyond individual brilliance to acknowledge the future stars of African football. Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Nigerian goalkeeper proving her mettle at Paris FC, was crowned the CAF Goalkeeper of the Year (Women), signifying the growing strength of women’s football on the continent. Lamine Camara, a Senegalese prodigy showcasing his talent at AS Monaco, received the accolade of CAF Young Player of the Year (Men), highlighting the potential for future greatness within African football. Doha El Madani, representing Morocco and AS FAR, secured the CAF Young Player of the Year (Women) award, further emphasizing the burgeoning talent in women’s football.

The managerial prowess shaping the beautiful game in Africa also received due recognition. Emerse Fae, the Ivorian tactician, was named CAF Coach of the Year (Men), a testament to his leadership and strategic acumen. On the women’s side, Lamia Boumehdi, guiding TP Mazembe to success, garnered the CAF Coach of the Year (Women) award. National team achievements were also celebrated, with Cote d’Ivoire claiming the CAF National Team of the Year (Men) title and Nigeria securing the CAF National Team of the Year (Women) award, showcasing their collective strength and dominance on the international stage.

The CAF Awards acknowledged excellence at the club level as well. Al Ahly, the Egyptian giants, were recognized as the CAF Club of the Year (Men), a tribute to their consistent performance and continental dominance. TP Mazembe, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, secured the CAF Club of the Year (Women) award, reflecting the growing prominence of women’s club football. The vital role of match officials was not overlooked, with Mutaz Ibrahim (Libya) and Bouchra Karboubi (Morocco) receiving the CAF Referee of the Year awards for men and women, respectively. Elvis Guy Noupue Nguegoue (Cameroon) and Diana Chikotesha (Zambia) were recognized as the CAF Assistant Referee of the Year for men and women, respectively.

The electrifying Mabululu from Angola clinched the CAF Goal of the Year award, a moment of individual brilliance that undoubtedly captivated fans across the continent. The FIFPRO CAF Best XI selections further highlighted the depth of talent in African football. The Men’s Best XI, deployed in a 3-4-3 formation, featured a formidable line-up: Andre Onana guarding the goal; Achraf Hakimi, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Chancel Mbemba forming a solid defensive line; Mohammed Kudus, Sofyan Amrabat, Franck Kessie, and Yves Bissouma controlling the midfield; and the attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Victor Osimhen, and Ademola Lookman promising goals galore.

The Women’s FIFPRO CAF Best XI, also in a 3-4-3 formation, showcased the cream of women’s football talent: Andile Dlamini between the posts; Michelle Alozie, Karabo Dhlamini, and Osinachi Ohale providing defensive stability; Lebohang Ramalepe, Linda Motlhalo, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Ghizlane Chebbak orchestrating the midfield; and the potent attacking force of Barbra Banda, Asisat Oshoala, and Tabitha Chawinga.
