Dr. Atinuke Owolabi, the immediate past chairman of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Lagos Chapter, highlighted the organization’s commitment to enhancing practical skills among engineers, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application for young professionals, and ensuring the continued relevance of senior engineers. This commitment was underscored during the chapter’s 2025 annual general meeting, which also featured an awards ceremony and the election of new officers.

During her two-year tenure, Dr. Owolabi spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at skill development and empowerment. Key accomplishments included workshops, training programs, and hackathons designed to equip members with in-demand skills. The APWEN Lagos Skill-Up initiative, in collaboration with AUTO-GIG, trained 25 engineers in AutoCAD, while another program empowered 38 members in digital manufacturing through a partnership with Microsoft. Cybersecurity workshops were also conducted in two series, further expanding members’ skillsets in this critical area. The chapter’s focus on practical application was evident in the organization of hands-on sessions covering mechanical, solar, and civil engineering disciplines.

APWEN Lagos also demonstrated a strong commitment to fostering the next generation of engineers. The SHEnovation Hackathon received an impressive 102 submissions, demonstrating the burgeoning interest in engineering innovation. The launch of the SECAP program engaged 200 young female engineers, providing them with valuable mentorship and guidance. STEM outreach initiatives reached over 1,500 girls through educational programs and awareness campaigns, inspiring them to pursue careers in science and technology. Targeted programs for specific age groups, such as engaging 11 schools on the International Day of the Girl Child in Education District IV, 10 schools on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in Education District III, and 10 schools on International Girls in ICT Day, further solidified APWEN’s commitment to nurturing young talent.

Beyond technical skills, APWEN Lagos prioritized holistic development, offering mentorship programs on health and hygiene for 120 girls. A STEM holiday camp in Makoko, held in honor of Dr. Felicia Agubata, provided a unique learning experience, while scholarships and support for the ‘She Creates and Robotics Demos’ at Pan Atlantic University further encouraged participation in STEM fields. Recognizing the importance of keeping senior engineers abreast of technological advancements, APWEN provided training in AI tools for over 50 senior professionals, ensuring their continued relevance in the rapidly evolving engineering landscape.

Dr. Owolabi’s leadership resulted in strengthened organizational systems, empowering numerous members and establishing APWEN Lagos as a progressive force in the engineering community. The chapter’s enhanced visibility, capacity building, and inspiring impact on female engineers have encouraged younger generations to strive for excellence and innovation within the field. This was further complemented by facilitating job placements, with Tranos, Covenant Plus, and a significant 20 placements with Dangote, highlighting the chapter’s dedication to career development and support for its members.

The establishment of the APWEN Lagos Innovation & Resource Hub at the University of Lagos, equipped with donated engineering and innovation tools for the Faculty of Engineering, further solidified the chapter’s commitment to fostering a culture of learning and innovation. The chapter welcomed approximately 120 new members, including students, professionals, and retirees, demonstrating its inclusive approach. The establishment of student chapters in prominent institutions like UNILAG, YABATECH, and LASU, coupled with initiatives supporting the transition from student to professional membership, further strengthen the pipeline of future engineers. Even after stepping down as chairman, Dr. Owolabi pledged continued involvement in APWEN Lagos and her commitment to using her position on the Board of the North Central Development Commission to empower future engineers and create opportunities for APWEN members.
