The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Western Marine Command, achieved a significant victory in the fight against drug trafficking with the interception of a substantial quantity of cannabis sativa. Operating near the Ilase Sea Beach, approximately 200 nautical miles from the Lagos Anchorage, customs officers engaged smugglers attempting to illicitly transport the contraband. The smugglers, overwhelmed by the officers’ presence, abandoned their vessel and fled into the sea. Upon securing the abandoned boat, officers discovered a staggering 3,793 loaves of cannabis sativa, packaged into 53 sacks and weighing a total of 1,958 kilograms. The estimated duty-paid value of the seized narcotics reached a staggering N398 million, marking the largest single seizure of cannabis sativa under the current administration of the Western Marine Command.

This successful operation, carried out late at night, underscores the intensified efforts and unwavering vigilance of the command’s officers in combating smuggling activities. Their “eagle-eyed” focus, as described by Customs Area Controller Paul Bamisaiye, proved crucial in intercepting the illicit cargo. This major bust follows another successful operation just two months prior, where the command seized 15 sacks containing 1,021 loaves of cannabis sativa, weighing 538kg and valued at N107 million. The consistent success in intercepting these large shipments of narcotics demonstrates the command’s commitment to curbing drug trafficking within its operational area.

The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and his management team received commendation for their instrumental role in facilitating these successful operations. Their provision of essential resources and equipment has significantly bolstered the Western Marine Command’s capacity to effectively combat smuggling. This support highlights the NCS’s broader commitment to strengthening border security and disrupting criminal networks involved in the illicit drug trade. The consistent flow of resources underscores the importance placed on interdicting drug trafficking and protecting the nation from the detrimental effects of narcotic substances.

Following established procedures, the seized cannabis sativa will be transferred to the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). This interagency cooperation is a crucial element in effectively combating drug trafficking. The NDLEA possesses the specialized expertise and legal mandate to investigate drug-related crimes, prosecute offenders, and dismantle drug trafficking networks. The handover ensures that the seized contraband is handled appropriately and that the legal process is followed to bring those responsible to justice. This collaborative approach strengthens the overall effectiveness of counter-narcotics efforts in Nigeria.

The Western Marine Command reiterated its commitment to collaborating with other sister agencies to ensure the nation’s borders remain secure. This interagency cooperation is vital in addressing the complex challenges posed by transnational criminal organizations involved in smuggling and drug trafficking. By sharing intelligence, coordinating operations, and pooling resources, these agencies create a more robust and effective defense against illicit activities. This collaborative approach recognizes that border security is a shared responsibility requiring joint efforts to achieve optimal results.

The successful interception of such a large quantity of cannabis sativa represents a significant blow to drug trafficking networks operating in the region. It not only removes a substantial amount of illicit drugs from circulation but also disrupts the financial flows that fuel these criminal enterprises. The continued vigilance and dedication of the Nigeria Customs Service, supported by interagency cooperation and adequate resources, are essential in maintaining the pressure on these networks and safeguarding Nigeria’s borders against illicit activities. The commitment to collaborative efforts and continuous improvement of operational capabilities will be crucial in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and other forms of transnational crime.
