The Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) in collaboration with the Grand Africa Initiative (GAIN) has taken a significant step towards empowering women entrepreneurs in Nigeria by launching the third edition of the GAIN Entrepreneurship Masterclass. This initiative aims to support 350 women across the nation by providing them with essential skills and resources to foster the growth and expansion of their businesses. Kicking off earlier this September, this comprehensive six-week training program is designed to cater specifically to the challenges faced by female entrepreneurs in Nigeria, thus demonstrating a commitment to gender equality in entrepreneurship.

The GAIN Entrepreneurship Masterclass will encompass training and mentorship sessions presented virtually, thereby making it accessible to participants from various regions in Nigeria. Recognizing the unique hurdles women entrepreneurs encounter, DBN has meticulously structured the program to deliver targeted support across vital areas. This includes financial literacy, strategic marketing, business modeling, legal aspects of business operations, customer management, and branding, among other topics. Such focus areas aim to empower participants with the tools and knowledge necessary to seize opportunities present within Nigeria’s rapidly evolving economic landscape.

DBN emphasizes the importance of women entrepreneurs in the sustainable development of the Nigerian economy. Their partnership with GAIN reflects a commitment to providing female-led micro and small enterprises with the resources they need to thrive. By specifically addressing the obstacles women face in the business environment, DBN is working towards fostering a more inclusive and resilient entrepreneurial ecosystem in Nigeria. This commitment not only seeks to bridge the gender gap in entrepreneurship but also to enable women to contribute significantly to the economic framework.

Dr. Tony Okpanachi, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of DBN, highlighted the bank’s objective through such initiatives: to create equal access to resources, training, and financing for women entrepreneurs. He acknowledges that women are vital to economic growth and innovation, and by equipping them with the necessary support and knowledge, DBN aims to harness their potential to catalyze development. The program is not merely about training; it represents a holistic approach aimed at empowering women to overcome barriers that hinder their entrepreneurial journeys.

Janet Oladapo, the Programme Officer for GAIN, expressed enthusiasm for the expected impact of the masterclass, citing previous successes from earlier editions. The unique offerings of the masterclass extend beyond high-quality training; they include opportunities for participants to network, gain insights from seasoned global mentors, and cultivate comprehensive knowledge essential for significant business growth. By fostering such connections and providing essential resources, GAIN and DBN are poised to enhance the entrepreneurial prospects of women in Nigeria.

In summary, the collaborative initiative between DBN and GAIN is a pivotal move toward transforming the entrepreneurial landscape for women in Nigeria. By providing a structured, supportive framework through the GAIN Entrepreneurship Masterclass, the program aims not only to equip women with critical skills but also to nurture a vibrant community of women entrepreneurs. This, in turn, contributes to achieving broader economic goals by promoting sustainable development and inclusivity in the entrepreneurial sector, thus ensuring that women have the opportunity and resources needed to succeed in their business endeavors.
