Dominance of Delta State at the 22nd National Sports Festival

The 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged "Gateway Games 2024," held in Ogun State, has witnessed the remarkable dominance of Team Delta. After seven days of intense competition, Delta State has amassed an impressive 103 medals, solidifying their position at the top of the medals table. Their haul includes 44 gold, 19 silver, and 40 bronze medals, showcasing their athletes’ prowess across a variety of sporting disciplines. This medal count significantly outpaces their closest rivals, highlighting Delta State’s commitment to athletic excellence and their robust sporting infrastructure.

Bayelsa State trails Delta in second place with a respectable 79 medals, comprising 33 gold, 23 silver, and 23 bronze. Rivers State maintains its third-place standing with 73 medals (26 gold, 21 silver, and 26 bronze), demonstrating their consistent performance in the games. Host state, Ogun, sits firmly in fourth place with 65 medals (25 gold, 16 silver, and 24 bronze), leveraging home advantage to achieve a strong showing. Oyo State rounds out the top five with 54 medals (14 gold, 17 silver, and 21 bronze), proving their competitive spirit in the national arena.

Edo State, despite being sixth in the gold medal tally, boasts a substantial overall medal count of 107, including 14 gold, a remarkable 48 silver, and 45 bronze medals. This impressive performance, particularly in securing silver medals, demonstrates a breadth of talent across their athletic contingent. Lagos State follows with 47 medals, Osun State with 15, and Abia State with 35, further contributing to the diverse representation of athletic achievement at the games.

The remaining states on the medals table represent a wide range of performances, with some demonstrating strength in specific sports and others steadily adding to their medal counts. Plateau State has secured 18 medals, Akwa Ibom and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) both have 11 medals, while Cross River has 5. The Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) have also made their presence felt, capturing 9 medals.

The diversity of medal winners extends further down the table, highlighting the nationwide participation and competitive nature of the National Sports Festival. Anambra, Imo, Niger, and Kwara have all secured medals, demonstrating their commitment to the games. As the games progress, the total medal count has reached 709, with 206 gold, 205 silver, and 298 bronze medals awarded.
