PDP Governors Chart Course for 2027 Elections, Rejecting Coalitions and Focusing on Internal Strengthening

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum convened a strategic meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State, to address crucial matters concerning the party’s future and its preparations for the 2027 general elections. A key outcome of this meeting was the firm decision to maintain the PDP’s distinct identity by rejecting any potential coalitions or mergers with other political entities. While welcoming individuals and groups who align with the PDP’s vision, the governors emphasized their commitment to strengthening the party from within and presenting a united front to reclaim power in the upcoming elections. This resolute stance underscores the PDP’s belief in its own capacity to provide effective leadership and address the nation’s challenges.

The governors also tackled critical organizational issues, focusing on the upcoming national convention and the zoning of party offices. Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, was appointed to chair the zoning committee, with Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, as vice chair and Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, as secretary. This committee will play a crucial role in determining the distribution of party positions, aiming to ensure equitable representation and foster internal cohesion. Simultaneously, Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, will lead the national convention committee, assisted by Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, as vice chair and Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, as secretary. This committee is tasked with overseeing the planning and execution of the national convention, a critical event for setting the party’s direction and selecting its leadership.

Addressing the vacancy in the national secretary position, the forum reiterated its previous recommendation for the deputy national secretary to assume the role in an acting capacity until a substantive secretary from the South East zone is nominated and ratified by the National Executive Committee (NEC). This decision reflects the party’s commitment to maintaining functionality within its organizational structure while adhering to its established procedures for filling key positions. Furthermore, the forum highlighted plans to convene a NEC meeting on May 27, 2025, to formally address this matter and other pertinent issues.

The forum also expressed serious concerns about the escalating security challenges across the nation, particularly in Borno, Plateau, Katsina, and Edo states. The governors called for a comprehensive review of current security strategies, advocating for a more decentralized approach that empowers sub-national entities to play a more effective role in safeguarding their territories. This emphasis on local involvement in security matters underscores the governors’ belief that a bottom-up approach can better address the specific security needs of different regions. They also condemned the recent attacks in Plateau State, expressing condolences to the victims and their families.

Demonstrating solidarity with suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, the forum reaffirmed its commitment to supporting him throughout his current challenges. The governors expressed strong disapproval of the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, viewing it as a threat to constitutional democracy. Consequently, they resolved to approach the Supreme Court for a definitive interpretation of the legal provisions governing the declaration of a state of emergency, seeking clarity on this crucial constitutional matter.

The PDP Governors’ Forum’s meeting in Ibadan signified a proactive effort to consolidate the party’s position ahead of the 2027 elections. The decisions made reflect a multi-pronged approach, focusing on internal organization, strategic positioning, and addressing national concerns. By rejecting coalitions and concentrating on internal strengthening, the PDP aims to project an image of unity and stability, positioning itself as a viable alternative to the ruling party. The focus on zoning and the national convention underscores the importance of internal democracy and inclusivity within the party. Furthermore, the governors’ emphasis on security and their support for Governor Fubara highlight their commitment to addressing critical national issues and upholding the principles of constitutionalism. The outcomes of this meeting will undoubtedly shape the PDP’s trajectory in the coming years, influencing its ability to compete effectively in the 2027 elections and beyond.
