The political landscape of Ilesa West Central Council in Osun State, Nigeria, is embroiled in a contentious dispute marked by accusations of violence, attempted assassination, and political maneuvering. Mr. Tobiloba Famurewa, the court-reinstated chairman of the council, has vehemently denied any involvement in the escalating crises that have tragically resulted in fatalities within the area. Instead, he points fingers at leaders within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alleging their complicity in the unrest. Famurewa’s claims have injected further complexity into an already volatile situation, prompting calls for thorough investigation and accountability.

Famurewa, in a public statement, implored the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, and the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Abba, to launch a comprehensive inquiry into the recurring crises plaguing the region. His objective is to identify and prosecute those responsible for instigating and perpetuating the violence. He detailed two separate incidents, occurring on February 5th and 17th, 2025, where he alleges that live ammunition was fired at his convoy in what he believes were attempts on his life. He insists on possessing substantial evidence to support these grave claims.

Emphasizing his commitment to peaceful political engagement, Famurewa categorically denies responsibility for any killings in Ilesa, asserting that these accusations are malicious attempts to tarnish his reputation. He underscored his belief that no political contest justifies the loss of human life. Drawing on his experience living in the United States for over a decade, he advocates for a politics centered on the interests of the masses and driven by substantive policy platforms, rather than resorting to hatred and violence.

Famurewa posits that his political rivals within the PDP are intimidated by his profile and growing influence, and are therefore resorting to extreme measures to silence him. The alleged assassination attempts have left him fearing for his safety and the well-being of his family and supporters. This fear has fueled his urgent appeal to the highest levels of law enforcement to intervene and restore order.

Responding to Famurewa’s accusations, Mr. Oladele Bamiji, the PDP spokesman in Osun State, welcomed the call for a police investigation, expressing confidence that such an inquiry would ultimately exonerate the party and implicate Famurewa. Bamiji maintained that the PDP unequivocally condemns violence and would never engage in actions that endanger lives. He expressed hope that the authorities would conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, leading to the apprehension and prosecution of the true perpetrators of the violence.

The unfolding situation in Ilesa West Central Council presents a stark illustration of the challenges facing Nigeria’s political landscape. Accusations of violence, assassination attempts, and political machinations underscore the urgent need for impartial investigations, accountability, and a renewed commitment to peaceful political discourse. The clash between Famurewa and the PDP highlights the deep-seated tensions and rivalries that can erupt into violence, threatening the stability and security of communities. The call for police intervention reflects the critical role of law enforcement in maintaining order and ensuring that those responsible for violence are brought to justice. Ultimately, the resolution of this conflict requires a commitment from all stakeholders to engage in peaceful and constructive dialogue, prioritizing the well-being of the community over personal or political gain.
