Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana and aspiring presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is embarking on a comprehensive campaign tour across the Ashanti Region from September 10th to 12th. This strategically important region holds significant weight within the NPP’s political landscape, and Dr. Bawumia’s visit aims to solidify his support base, articulate his vision for the party’s future, and foster unity among its ranks ahead of the crucial presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026. The tour serves as a platform for direct engagement with party delegates, grassroots members, and key stakeholders, underscoring Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to a bottom-up approach in building momentum for his candidacy.

The meticulously planned itinerary will cover seven operational zones within the Ashanti Region: Adansi, Amansie, Asante Akim, Sekyere-Kumawu, Afigya Kwabre, Mampong Nsuta, Ahafo and Atwima, as well as Kumasi Zones 1 & 2. This comprehensive coverage ensures that Dr. Bawumia reaches all corners of the region, maximizing his interaction with diverse party constituencies. Within each zone, he will hold meetings with a wide range of influential figures, including regional and constituency executives, Members of Parliament, former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), former CEOs, regional Council of Elders, and former party executives. These targeted engagements demonstrate a strategic effort to build consensus and garner support from key decision-makers within the party structure.

The tour’s timing, months ahead of the primaries, signifies Dr. Bawumia’s proactive approach to campaigning. By engaging early and directly with the party’s grassroots, he aims to establish a strong foundation of support and build momentum ahead of the competitive primary race. His message will focus on three key themes: unity, peace, and reconciliation. These themes resonate with the party’s current need for internal cohesion and demonstrate Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to bridging any divides that may exist within the NPP. He will formally declare his intention to contest the presidential primaries to these key party elders in the region, seeking their endorsement and support.

The structured schedule of the tour reflects a well-organized campaign strategy. The first day, Wednesday, will focus on the Adansi, Amansie, and Asante Akim zones. Thursday will see engagements in the Sekyere Effiduase-Kumawu, Nsuta-Mampong, and Afigya Kwabre zones. The tour culminates on Friday with visits to Ahafo, Atwima, and the two Kumasi operational zones. This phased approach allows for focused engagement within each zone and ensures that Dr. Bawumia dedicates sufficient time to connect with local party members and address their specific concerns.

Beyond simply announcing his candidacy, Dr. Bawumia’s interactions during the tour will emphasize the importance of party unity and collective effort in achieving the NPP’s overarching goals. He aims to rally support not only for his individual candidacy but also for the broader party agenda, looking ahead to the 2028 general elections. This forward-looking approach highlights his commitment to the party’s long-term success and positions him as a leader dedicated to building a stronger and more unified NPP. By stressing the importance of working together, he seeks to create a sense of shared purpose and inspire party members to actively participate in the upcoming electoral campaigns.

This initial tour serves as a crucial first step in Dr. Bawumia’s broader campaign strategy. Following this engagement with regional and constituency leaders, plans are in place for a more grassroots-focused phase, where he will directly engage with Electoral Area Coordinators and polling station executives. This direct outreach to the party’s ground forces will be vital in mobilizing support at the local level and ensuring a strong turnout during the primaries. The combination of top-down engagement with party leadership and bottom-up connection with grassroots activists demonstrates a comprehensive and well-structured campaign approach designed to maximize his reach and solidify his standing within the NPP.
