The eighth edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), a tournament exclusively for players based in their respective domestic leagues, kicked off on January 13, 2024, with joint-host Tanzania securing a 2-0 victory against Burkina Faso. This sets the stage for Nigeria’s Super Eagles B, who are eager to make their mark in the competition after securing their qualification by overcoming Ghana. Their campaign begins on Tuesday, January 16, with a challenging encounter against defending champions Senegal at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar. This match holds significant weight for the Nigerian side as they aim to not only start their tournament on a high note but also establish themselves as genuine contenders for the title, a feat they have yet to achieve in their CHAN history.

Nigeria’s previous CHAN appearances have yielded mixed results. A bronze medal finish in 2014 was followed by a runner-up position in 2018, showcasing the team’s potential to compete at the highest level. However, their failure to qualify for the subsequent two editions underscores the unpredictable nature of the competition and the challenges the Super Eagles B face in their quest for continental glory. This year, under the guidance of Franco-Malian coach Eric Chelle, the team has undergone rigorous preparation, including a three-week training camp in Ikenne-Remo and a 10-day stint in Zanzibar. These preparations included a series of friendly matches, with victories in all three games played in Ikenne followed by two draws against Zanzibar, providing valuable experience and allowing Chelle to fine-tune his strategies.

Chelle has expressed confidence in his 23-man squad, highlighting their belief and self-assurance as key ingredients for success in the tournament. The squad boasts a blend of experience and emerging talent, with several players who participated in the qualifying campaign against Ghana forming the core of the team. Goalkeeper Ozoemena Ani, defenders Sodiq Ismaila and Junior Nduka, midfielder Alex Oyowah, and forwards Anas Yusuf and Sikiru Alimi provide a solid foundation, their familiarity with Chelle’s tactics and understanding of each other’s strengths a valuable asset. These experienced players are complemented by promising additions such as Steven Mayo and Leonard Ngenge in defense, Adedayo Olamilekan, Hadi Haruna, and Michael Tochukwu in midfield, and Temitope Vincent, Shola Adelani, and Godwin Obaje in attack, injecting fresh energy and dynamism into the squad.

The opening match against Senegal presents a formidable challenge for Nigeria. As the defending champions, Senegal will be determined to assert their dominance from the outset and maintain their grip on the CHAN trophy. This clash will be a test of Nigeria’s tactical acumen, mental fortitude, and ability to perform under pressure. A victory against Senegal would not only boost Nigeria’s confidence but also send a strong message to their other Group B rivals, Sudan and Congo. It would set the tone for the remainder of their group stage campaign and provide momentum as they navigate the complexities of the tournament.

Beyond the immediate objective of securing three points against Senegal, Nigeria’s broader ambition is to finally lift the CHAN trophy. This aspiration reflects the growth and development of Nigerian football at the domestic level and the desire to showcase the talent within the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL). Success in the CHAN would not only bring immense pride to the nation but also provide a platform for individual players to gain international recognition and potentially secure moves to more prominent leagues. The tournament serves as a valuable stepping stone for players aspiring to represent the senior national team, the Super Eagles, and further their professional careers.

The CHAN offers a unique opportunity for players based in African domestic leagues to showcase their abilities on a continental stage. It is a platform for them to compete against some of the best talent on the continent and gain valuable experience in a high-pressure environment. For Nigeria, the tournament represents a chance to solidify their position as a footballing powerhouse in Africa and demonstrate the depth of talent within their domestic league. The Super Eagles B will be aiming to make a significant impact on the tournament and etch their names in Nigerian football history by bringing home the coveted CHAN trophy.
