The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the Japanese government, represented by their mission to the African Union, have embarked on a pioneering collaborative effort to propel Africa’s economic integration through the effective implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This partnership, solidified by a $1 million grant from Japan, signifies the country’s first direct financial contribution to ECA’s integration initiatives, underscoring their shared commitment to fostering digital innovation, inclusive trade practices, and robust regional value chain development across the African continent. The project, aptly titled “Boosting Intra-African Trade through Leveraging Digitalization for Effective and Inclusive AfCFTA Implementation,” is slated for execution over a 12-month period.
This collaborative venture aims to empower AfCFTA member states in realizing the full potential of the free trade area. This will be achieved through enhanced accessibility to vital trade information, strengthening of digital ecosystems, and targeted support for women-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in key AU countries, including Namibia, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, and Tanzania. The initiative envisions a more integrated and digitally advanced Africa, creating new avenues for SMEs, particularly those led by women, while reinforcing the Japan-Africa partnership in trade and technology. The project represents a tangible demonstration of the commitment by both ECA and Japan to driving sustainable economic growth and development within Africa.
The initiative is designed to deliver tangible outcomes that will directly contribute to the AfCFTA’s success. These include the development of national digital trade portals, providing a readily accessible platform for trade-related information and procedures. A continental database on raw materials and production inputs, specifically focusing on the textiles and apparel sector, will be established to facilitate sourcing and promote intra-African trade within this crucial industry. Furthermore, practical step-by-step guides will be created to simplify trading under the AfCFTA framework, making it easier for businesses to navigate the agreement’s provisions. Capacity building will be a central component, with targeted training programs designed for government officials and women entrepreneurs to enhance their understanding and utilization of the AfCFTA.

Beyond these core partners, the project will engage with a wider network of stakeholders, including national governments, the AfCFTA Secretariat, Regional Economic Communities, and private sector actors, particularly Japanese SMEs.
