Enhancing Power Reliability in Ghana’s Volta Region: A New Transformer for Sogakofe and Beyond
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), has embarked on a significant infrastructure upgrade to bolster power reliability and quality in the Volta Region. A new 10/13 MVA power transformer has been commissioned at the Sogakofe GRIDCo Substation, marking a crucial step towards modernizing the region’s electricity distribution network. This development aims to address the growing energy demands of Sogakofe, Akatsi, and surrounding communities, ensuring a more stable and consistent power supply for residents and businesses alike. The commissioning of this transformer signifies a joint commitment by ECG and GRIDCo to strengthen the region’s power infrastructure and enhance the overall quality of service provided to customers.
The newly installed transformer complements an existing 15 MVA unit at the Sogakofe Substation, which currently serves Adidome, Keta, and other areas. This strategic addition will allow for better load balancing between districts, reducing the strain on the existing infrastructure and minimizing the frequency of power interruptions. Previously, the sole 15 MVA transformer was tasked with servicing four major districts, resulting in operational strain and decreased efficiency. The new transformer will alleviate this pressure, ensuring more reliable power distribution across the southern Volta Region. Furthermore, the project will improve voltage levels, supporting both current needs and future development in the region’s southern corridor.
The investment in the new transformer, estimated at GH¢969,867.90, underscores ECG’s commitment to enhancing the flexibility, reliability, and resilience of its power supply network. This initiative directly addresses the increasing power demand driven by population growth and business expansion in the region. The enhanced capacity will not only benefit Sogakofe and Akatsi districts directly but also indirectly support parts of Keta, Adidome, and even sections of the Ketu South Municipality, including Denu.
