The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed a gas explosion in the Oroazi community of Port Harcourt, resulting in severe injuries to 18 individuals. The incident, occurring on a Sunday evening at a gas refilling shop, caused significant damage to adjacent structures. This explosion adds to a string of gas-related and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) incidents plaguing the state since the beginning of 2024. SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the command’s spokesperson, verified the details during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The incident underscores the precarious nature of gas handling practices and the urgent need for stricter safety regulations in the state.

The explosion, according to the police spokesperson, originated from a welding operation within the gas refilling shop. A technician was attempting to repair a refrigerator using a gas cylinder for welding while simultaneously refilling the appliance with gas. This dangerous combination of activities created a volatile situation, ultimately leading to the explosion. While the incident resulted in numerous casualties, thankfully, no fatalities were reported. The 18 injured individuals, including the technician responsible for the mishap, suffered varying degrees of burns. They were promptly transported to the hospital for treatment, and their current status remains a subject of concern and ongoing updates.

The police have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident, aiming to ascertain the exact sequence of events and identify any contributing factors beyond the initial assessment. This investigation will explore potential negligence, safety violations, and any other relevant aspects that could have played a role in the explosion. Upon completion, the findings will be shared with the public to ensure transparency and accountability. This investigation represents a critical step towards understanding the root causes of such incidents and implementing preventive measures for the future.

Eyewitness accounts provide a chilling perspective on the devastation caused by the explosion. Tamuno, a witness at the scene, described the explosion as a catastrophic event, highlighting the vulnerability of those in the vicinity. Among the victims were a pregnant woman, four children, and a couple, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of the blast and its impact on vulnerable members of the community. The explosion triggered a chain reaction, igniting other gas cylinders within the shop, amplifying the destructive force and increasing the number of casualties.

The victims primarily comprised residents and passers-by who happened to be near the shop at the time of the explosion. Their presence at the wrong place and the wrong time tragically resulted in their injuries. Many of the injured were rushed to the Rivers State Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt, where they are currently receiving medical attention. The witness expressed hope for their recovery, reflecting the collective concern and empathy within the community.

This incident highlights the inherent risks associated with the handling and storage of flammable materials, particularly in densely populated areas. The combination of a gas refilling operation and welding activities within the same confined space created a recipe for disaster. The incident underscores the urgent need for stricter regulations and enforcement of safety protocols pertaining to gas handling practices. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the potential dangers associated with such businesses and the necessary precautions to mitigate risks. The ongoing police investigation, coupled with the eyewitness testimony, provides a crucial framework for understanding the causes of this tragedy and preventing similar incidents in the future. The hope remains that the injured will recover fully and that the community can heal from this devastating event.
