Dr. Olusola Osetoba, Technical Adviser on Sports Development to the Ekiti State Governor, has announced the commencement of a comprehensive rehabilitation project for the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado Ekiti. This initiative underscores Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s dedication to advancing sports within the state. The project’s centerpiece involves the installation of FIFA-standard synthetic grass, imported from Italy and laid by specialized professionals. This upgrade signifies a significant step towards elevating the stadium to international standards, enabling it to host prestigious matches and competitions both domestically and internationally. Beyond the playing surface, the rehabilitation extends to other crucial aspects, including the installation of new tartan tracks for athletic events, further enhancing the stadium’s versatility and appeal.

The stadium’s renovation encompasses a multi-faceted approach to modernize its facilities and enhance the overall spectator experience. The existing spectator stands will undergo refurbishment, improving comfort and aesthetics. Additionally, the construction of standard canopies over previously uncovered stands will provide shelter and protection from the elements, ensuring a more enjoyable viewing experience for all attendees. Furthermore, the project includes the development of a dedicated administrative block within the stadium complex for the State Sports Commission. This new facility will streamline administrative operations and provide a centralized hub for sports management within the state.

Parallel to the stadium’s rehabilitation, the Oyebanji administration is progressing with the construction of a modern 900-seater indoor sports hall. This state-of-the-art facility will cater to a diverse range of sporting disciplines, including basketball, badminton, handball, volleyball, and boxing, among others. This addition will significantly expand the state’s capacity to host various sporting events and training programs, fostering the development of athletes across multiple disciplines. The simultaneous development of both the stadium and the indoor sports hall showcases the government’s comprehensive strategy to bolster sports infrastructure within the state.

The combined impact of the renovated stadium and the new indoor sports hall will be transformative for Ekiti State’s sporting landscape. The Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, with its upgraded facilities, will attract higher-profile events, increasing the state’s visibility on the national and international sporting stage. The indoor sports hall will provide a dedicated space for training and competition, nurturing athletic talent and fostering a thriving sports culture within the community. These investments demonstrate a long-term commitment to sports development, positioning Ekiti State as a hub for sporting excellence.

In preparation for the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged ‘Ogun 2025,’ the Ekiti State Sports Commission has proactively organized a two-week intensive training camp for the state’s contingent. This dedicated training period aims to equip athletes with the necessary skills and conditioning to compete effectively at the festival. Focusing on skill development and strategic preparation, the camp underscores the state’s commitment to achieving a strong performance at the national level. This initiative further highlights the comprehensive nature of the state’s sports development strategy, encompassing infrastructure development, athlete training, and participation in national competitions.

The Oyebanji administration’s commitment to revitalizing sports in Ekiti State extends beyond general infrastructure improvements. Recognizing the state’s historical prominence in weightlifting, the government has also undertaken the renovation of the weightlifting gymnasium within the stadium. This targeted investment reflects a commitment to preserving and strengthening traditional areas of sporting strength. By providing modern and well-equipped training facilities, the government aims to reignite enthusiasm for weightlifting and cultivate the next generation of weightlifting champions. This initiative underscores the holistic approach to sports development, focusing not only on popular sports but also on nurturing existing strengths and traditions within the state’s sporting identity. This comprehensive strategy positions Ekiti State for a future of sporting success across a diverse range of disciplines.
