Former executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are galvanizing their commitment to bolster the party’s efforts for a strong showing in the forthcoming December 7, 2024, general elections. The assertiveness of this resolve was prominently articulated by Mr. Tawiah Boateng, the former NDC Eastern Regional Chairman, during a training and sensitization session for the Eastern Regional Chapter of the Coalition of NDC Former Executives (CONFEX). Stressed throughout the session was the intent to synergize the experiences of these former leaders with current executives to remedy what they termed the “economic and social mess” left in the wake of the Nana Addo-Bawumia administration. This collaboration is set to play a pivotal role in driving the party’s campaign efforts to ensure they secure a convincing victory.
Mr. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, former NDC General Secretary, underscored the essential principle of unity within the party. He implored members to remain vigilant against complacency, highlighting the importance of unity in electoral success. While he expressed optimism about the NDC’s chances in the elections, he noted that until the last ballot is counted, the party should work collectively and tirelessly. The call to arms reiterated the notion that every individual within the party, whether former or current executive, has a crucial part to play. To reinforce this message, Mr. Afriyie Ankrah shared his personal journey of loyalty and dedication to the party even after facing electoral defeats, advocating for sustained participation from all former executives.
The training session also served to clarify CONFEX’s primary objective: to ensure that former President John Dramani Mahama is re-elected while simultaneously enhancing the NDC’s presence in parliament. Mr. Boateng exuded confidence that the insights and seasoned perspectives of former executives would significantly propel these aims forward. Addressing the past strains between former and current party executives, he acknowledged that such discord had adversely influenced parliamentary outcomes for the NDC. He assured attendees that CONFEX is diligently working toward reconciliation and unity to prevent the recurrence of such issues ahead of the impending elections.
The camaraderie being fostered was reiterated by Mr. David Kwadwo Siaw Frempong, the former NDC Chairman for Abuakwa North, who emphasized a continuous spirit of collaboration with the party’s current leadership. He called for former executives to view themselves as supporters rather than competitors. His assertion that there is no need for current executives to feel threatened by former members hints at a shift in culture within the party, focused on collective achievements rather than historical rivalries. The shared belief was prevalent that if all remain united, the likelihood of success in the 2024 elections would be markedly enhanced.
Madam Anita Desoso, a former National Women’s Organizer, voiced her support for the NDC’s initiatives and assured that women within the party are dedicated to contributing to the NDC’s agenda. She urged all members, especially women, to maintain a collective focus on the party’s growth and success during upcoming elections. Her call for prayer underscored a more spiritual aspect of the mobilization alongside practical political strategies, as she expressed faith in Mahama’s leadership for better governance. The women’s contribution was deemed vital in attaining the broader objective of party victory.
Finally, Mr. William Kwame Atamudzi, who has taken on multiple leadership roles within the NDC, highlighted the necessity of a revitalized membership drive. He pointed out the common issue of former executives being sidelined after leaving office but urged a collective move forward for the sake of the party’s success. The essence of his message was the importance of unity, collaboration, and inclusivity among all party members. Through a harmonized approach, the NDC aims to leverage the strengths of both current and former executives to make significant strides on election day, thereby achieving an overwhelming victory in the 2024 parliamentary and presidential elections.
