The National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana’s principal opposition party, has recently expressed its stance on the signing of the Peace Pact for the upcoming December 7 general elections. Mr. Mustapha Gbande, who serves as the General Secretary responsible for Operations within the party, made this clarification in a public statement issued on a Thursday. In the statement, Gbande underscored that the party’s initial grievances regarding the Peace Pact, introduced by the National Peace Council, remain critical and relevant. Despite the party’s concerns, discussions held with the Peace Council have reportedly resolved many of the conditions stipulated by the NDC, although some issues still require additional dialogue and negotiation.
The party leadership has conducted a thorough assessment of the Peace Council’s latest proposal, acknowledging that a majority of their demands have been addressed. Nonetheless, some aspects remain unresolved, necessitating further conversation with the Council and other stakeholders involved in the electoral process. Gbande emphasized the NDC’s strong commitment to ensuring that the upcoming elections are conducted peacefully, asserting that various institutions are preparing for a transparent election free from violence and other irregularities. This commitment aligns with the NDC’s broader goal of maintaining Ghana’s political stability.
Central to the NDC’s mission is their flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, a former President of Ghana and noted international peace ambassador. Mahama’s leadership and dedication to safeguarding electoral processes that uphold national stability have been reiterated by the party. Gbande remarked that the NDC is vigilant and ready to counter any potential acts of lawlessness that may occur on election day. Such proactive measures are meant not only to assure party members and the general public but also to reaffirm the NDC’s resolve to promote a peaceful and orderly election.
Mr. Gbande further announced that party leadership has agreed to participate in the upcoming meeting organized by the Peace Council. This meeting aims to deliberate on the remaining unresolved issues regarding the Peace Pact with relevant stakeholders. He indicated that should there be a need to formalize their signing of the pact, the decision will be made jointly by the party’s flagbearer, the General Secretary, and the National Chairman, ensuring it serves the party’s best interest while promoting peaceful elections.
As the election date approaches, the NDC has urged its members and the wider public to stay engaged in the electoral process. They encourage ongoing monitoring of developments and announcements issued through the party’s Communication Bureau to remain informed. Furthermore, stakeholders and commentators are encouraged to align their views with the party’s official position in order to prevent the spread of misinformation that could undermine the electoral process.
In summary, the NDC remains committed to engaging in further discussions regarding the Peace Pact as they prepare for the forthcoming elections. While recognizing that many of their concerns have been addressed, they are determined to resolve outstanding issues collaboratively with the National Peace Council and other relevant partners. With a focus on maintaining a peaceful electoral environment, the NDC aims to ensure a fair election that reflects the will of the Ghanaian people while guarding against any disruptions that may threaten the integrity of the democratic process.
