In a recent campaign tour through the Western North Region, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the vice presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness from the Electoral Commission (EC) in the lead-up to the December elections. During her visit to the chiefs and elders of Dadieso within the Suaman Constituency, she underscored the critical role the EC plays in maintaining Ghana’s longstanding peace and stability. Opoku-Agyemang articulated the expectation that the EC should engage equally with all political entities to ensure that the electoral process remains unbiased and free from interference. Her comments reflect a broader call for adherence to democratic principles by all involved in the electoral process, stressing that the integrity of the upcoming elections is paramount for preserving Ghana’s peaceful atmosphere.

Further advocating for the safeguarding of Ghana’s democratic values, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang pointed out the vital duty of traditional rulers and opinion leaders in this context. She urged them to actively protect and defend the nation’s peace by voicing their concerns whenever they perceive actions by the Electoral Commission that could compromise the fairness of the election. According to her, maintaining the integrity of the electoral process is a collective responsibility that requires vigilance and accountability from all societal leaders. She expressed that the traditional leaders must hold the EC accountable for its actions, urging them to denounce any behavior that risks undermining the credibility and peaceful conduct of the forthcoming elections.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also called upon constituents in the Aowin area to rally behind the NDC’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama. She urged voters to support Mahama in the elections, suggesting that a victory for the NDC would set the stage for critical developmental policies aimed at revitalizing the economy. She highlighted significant initiatives, including the implementation of the “Big Push” and the establishment of a 24-Hour Economy, both of which are designed to create job opportunities and enhance productivity across various sectors in Ghana. By voting for Mahama, Opoku-Agyemang believes that Ghanaians will be endorsing a vision that seeks to restore economic stability and improve living standards.

Additionally, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang addressed the empowerment of women through economic initiatives, specifically the proposed Women’s Development Bank. She articulated the need for targeted financial support for women, who play a crucial role in the nation’s development yet often lack the necessary resources to thrive economically. Her focus on women’s empowerment reflects a commitment to promoting gender equality and ensuring that women are included in national development efforts. The creation of a financial institution dedicated to women aims to provide the necessary backing for them to pursue entrepreneurial ventures, thereby contributing to the economic growth and diversity of the country.

In response to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s appeals, Nana Manah Kwabena III, the Kyidomhene of Suaman Traditional Council, commended the NDC for its ongoing developmental efforts in the region. He acknowledged the party’s contributions and the rationale behind their campaign messaging, affirming that these efforts have validated the reasons why citizens should consider casting their votes for NDC candidates in the upcoming elections. His support underlines the importance of local traditional leadership in shaping the political landscape and the impact that community endorsement can have on the electoral process.

As Ghana approaches the December elections, the call for transparency, accountability, and active citizenship resonates strongly, embodying the core values necessary for democratic governance. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s campaign message not only highlights the NDC’s plans for economic rejuvenation and gender equity but also stresses the shared responsibility of all Ghanaians in ensuring a fair electoral process. Her engagement with traditional leaders exemplifies the crucial partnership needed between governmental entities and grassroots community leaders to preserve the peace and progress that Ghana has achieved over the years. As such, the upcoming elections represent an opportunity not just for political change but for reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to democracy and stability.
