Hypertension on the Rise in Western Ghana: Urgent Call for Increased Awareness and Screening

The Western Region of Ghana is witnessing a concerning rise in hypertension cases, prompting health authorities to intensify public awareness campaigns and screening efforts. Dr. Gifty Amugi, the Acting Western Regional Director of Ghana Health Service (GHS), revealed a notable increase in hypertension prevalence, rising from 2.96% in 2023 to 3.11% by the end of 2024. This upward trend, based on data collected from individuals seeking blood pressure checks at health facilities, raises concerns about the potential for a larger undetected population harboring the condition. The insidious nature of hypertension, often asymptomatic in its early stages, poses significant risks as it can lead to severe and life-threatening complications if left unmanaged.

In response to this growing health concern, the GHS Western Regional Directorate commemorated World Hypertension Day in Takoradi under the theme: "Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control it, Live Longer." This year’s theme highlights the critical importance of regular blood pressure monitoring and effective management to mitigate the long-term health consequences of hypertension. The Regional Directorate has launched a comprehensive initiative with an ambitious target to screen 66,000 individuals for early detection and appropriate management of the disease. This proactive approach underscores the region’s commitment to combatting hypertension and promoting cardiovascular health among its residents.

As part of the ongoing campaign, healthcare professionals have already screened over 8,000 individuals, demonstrating significant progress toward the ambitious target. The screening efforts are strategically designed to reach a wide range of individuals across various settings. Healthcare teams are actively engaging communities by conducting screenings in schools, corporate organizations, institutions, transportation hubs, markets, religious gatherings, and other accessible locations. This multi-pronged approach aims to maximize reach and ensure that individuals from all walks of life have the opportunity to assess their blood pressure and receive necessary guidance.

The World Hypertension Day commemoration served as a crucial platform to amplify awareness about the often-silent threat posed by uncontrolled hypertension. Dr. Amugi emphasized the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring for all adults, urging individuals to be proactive in managing their cardiovascular health. Understanding the potential consequences of unmanaged or poorly managed hypertension is essential for empowering individuals to take control of their well-being. The campaign stresses the importance of accurate blood pressure measurement as a cornerstone of effective hypertension management.

The Western Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Nelson, commended the GHS Regional Directorate and healthcare professionals for their tireless efforts in promoting health awareness and education throughout the region. He underscored the collaborative spirit necessary to achieve the target of screening 66,000 individuals. By actively participating in the screening exercise, individuals can identify their risk status and access the necessary support and guidance to manage their condition effectively. The Minister’s endorsement reinforces the importance of community engagement and underscores the shared responsibility for promoting public health within the region.

Mr. Nelson’s call to action extended beyond mere participation in the screening exercise. He urged the public to become active advocates for health awareness, disseminating information about hypertension and its management within their communities. In addition to screening, promoting healthy lifestyle choices plays a crucial role in combating hypertension. Adopting and maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and managing stress effectively are key components of a comprehensive approach to hypertension prevention and management. The collective effort of healthcare professionals, government officials, and community members is essential for achieving the shared goal of improved cardiovascular health and well-being within the Western Region of Ghana.
