The Ghana Police Service achieved a significant victory against organized crime with the successful dismantling of a notorious armed robbery syndicate responsible for terrorizing rural banks across five regions. Eleven officers instrumental in this operation were subsequently promoted in recognition of their exceptional performance and dedication. The syndicate, active between April and September 2025, executed eleven armed robberies across the Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti regions. Their reign of terror ended through a meticulous six-month intelligence-led operation, culminating in the arrest of ten suspects, the neutralization of three others during armed confrontations, and the recovery of substantial evidence linking them to the crimes. The operation’s success underscores the police service’s commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring public safety.

Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, announced the well-deserved promotions during a press conference in Accra on September 24, 2025. He emphasized the importance of recognizing and rewarding exceptional police work, particularly in complex operations requiring extensive intelligence gathering and coordinated action. The promotions included elevations across various ranks, from Constable to Assistant Superintendent of Police, reflecting the collective effort and the diverse roles played by officers in the successful operation. Dr. Yohuno highlighted the significance of the breakthrough, describing it as a decisive blow against violent crime and a testament to the evolving capabilities and dedication of the Ghana Police Service.

The meticulous operation not only led to the arrest of the majority of the gang members but also yielded a substantial haul of recovered items. Fourteen weapons were seized, including AK-47 rifles, some of which were identified as belonging to officers killed in the line of duty. The recovery of these weapons represents a significant step towards enhancing police safety and preventing further criminal activity. In addition to the firearms, the operation recovered GH¢18,845 in cash, foreign currencies, motorbikes, vehicles, and jewellery, providing further evidence of the syndicate’s extensive criminal activities and the financial gains they accrued through their robberies. The recovery of Corporal Francis Eduyao’s AK-47, stolen during his murder on the Bibiani-Goaso highway in November 2024, brought a sense of closure and justice to a tragic incident.

The operation, while highly successful, remains incomplete. Two key figures in the robbery syndicate, Kwabena Owusu-Ansah, alias Kobe, an ex-convict believed to be the gang’s recruiter, and an accomplice known as Nana Albert, are still at large. Their continued freedom represents an ongoing threat, and the police have vowed to relentlessly pursue them until they are apprehended and brought to justice. Dr. Yohuno reassured the public of the police service’s unwavering commitment to ensuring their safety and security, emphasizing that the pursuit of these remaining suspects is a top priority. The ongoing investigation aims to bring these individuals to justice and further dismantle any remaining networks associated with the criminal syndicate.

The successful operation and subsequent promotions serve as a powerful message to criminal elements operating within Ghana. The police force is becoming increasingly sophisticated in its intelligence-gathering and operational capabilities, making it more difficult for criminal enterprises to thrive. The promotions also underscore the importance of dedicated and skilled police officers in maintaining law and order and protecting communities from the threat of violent crime. Dr. Yohuno’s assurance to the public reflects the police service’s determination to create an environment where criminals are constantly under pressure and their activities are disrupted.

The operation exemplifies the importance of a multi-faceted approach to crime-fighting. The successful outcome was a result of dedicated intelligence gathering, coordinated operational planning, and the bravery of officers who put themselves in harm’s way to apprehend dangerous criminals. This success builds public trust in the police force and reinforces their role as protectors of the community. The ongoing pursuit of the remaining suspects, coupled with the successful dismantling of the core group, sends a strong message that crime will not be tolerated and that those who engage in it will face the full force of the law. The police service’s commitment to continuous improvement and investment in its personnel and resources are crucial in maintaining its effectiveness and ensuring the safety and security of all Ghanaians.
