The Symbiotic Relationship between Government and Media in a Thriving Democracy

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, during the 2025 Biennial Convention of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, underscored the indispensable role of a robust and informed media in fostering a thriving democracy. He emphasized that democratic governance flourishes when citizens are well-informed and actively engage in critical discourse, holding those in power accountable. Mbah posited that both the government and the media are integral partners in shaping Nigeria’s future, advocating for a synergistic relationship based on trust and mutual respect. He urged for open dialogue and constructive criticism, viewing critical engagement not as hostility but as a crucial element of public service. Mbah’s vision is of a media landscape that is inclusive, amplifying the voices of marginalized communities and reflecting the rich tapestry of Nigeria’s diverse populace, rather than stifling dissenting opinions.

Central to Mbah’s address was the importance of transparency and accountability within his administration. He highlighted the government’s commitment to opening its financial records, operational procedures, and policy formulations to public scrutiny. This transparency, he believes, is crucial for building public trust and fostering a sense of shared ownership in the governance process. Mbah stressed that an informed citizenry, empowered by access to information, is better equipped to participate meaningfully in democratic processes and hold their elected representatives accountable. He championed the concept of inclusive governance, emphasizing the need to ensure that all segments of society are represented and have a voice in shaping their future.

Mbah elaborated on his administration’s initiatives to promote inclusive development and distribute democratic dividends equitably across the state. He cited the strategic distribution of 260 Smart Green Schools, 260 Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres, and 260 Farm Estates, strategically aligned with the 260 wards in Enugu State. This targeted approach aims to ensure that no community is left behind in the state’s development trajectory, fostering a sense of shared prosperity and reducing regional disparities. These projects are tangible manifestations of Mbah’s commitment to improving education, healthcare, and agricultural opportunities across the state.

Further outlining his administration’s ambitious economic agenda, Mbah articulated his vision for a $30 billion economy for Enugu State, driven by robust entrepreneurial activity and accountable leadership. This ambitious goal reflects a commitment to transforming Enugu into a thriving economic hub, generating wealth, and creating opportunities for its citizens. Mbah stressed the vital role of entrepreneurship and innovation in driving economic growth and achieving this ambitious target. He emphasized that achieving this transformative economic vision requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including the government, private sector, and civil society.

The convention, themed "Building a Secure and Cohesive Nigeria: The Role of Dialogue, Inclusion, and the Media," brought together approximately 400 prominent figures in the Nigerian media landscape.
