The Impact Investors Foundation (IIF) has spearheaded a significant capacity-building initiative in Nigeria, empowering enterprise support organizations (ESOs) and business development service (BDS) providers with advanced tools and strategies to effectively support social enterprises. This three-day intensive training program, funded by the UK International Development’s RISA Fund, focused on equipping participants with practical methodologies based on the globally recognized Argidius SCALE framework, a comprehensive approach to optimizing business support services. The initiative aims to strengthen Nigeria’s entrepreneurial ecosystem by enhancing the capabilities of ESOs and BDS providers, enabling them to deliver scalable and high-impact support to a wider range of businesses, ultimately driving sustainable economic growth.

The training program brought together key players from across Nigeria’s entrepreneurial landscape, including leaders and program managers from various ESOs and BDS providers. Through immersive sessions led by industry experts, participants gained a deep understanding of the Argidius SCALE framework and its application in diverse business environments. The training emphasized practical application, allowing participants to develop actionable roadmaps for implementing the SCALE framework within their respective organizations. This hands-on approach ensured that the acquired knowledge could be directly translated into improved service delivery and enhanced support for social enterprises.

The IIF’s initiative addresses a critical need within Nigeria’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, recognizing that the effectiveness and reach of ESOs and BDS providers are essential for driving sustainable business growth. By equipping these organizations with the right tools and frameworks, the program aims to create a more robust and impactful support system for entrepreneurs. This strengthened ecosystem will not only improve the quality of business support services but also enhance the overall sustainability and scalability of the businesses they serve. The focus on capacity building ensures that ESOs and BDS providers are well-positioned to effectively guide and support entrepreneurs in navigating the challenges of business development and growth.

The training covered a range of critical areas, including improving business support models, developing sustainable scaling strategies, measuring and enhancing impact through evaluation best practices, and fostering collaboration among ecosystem players. Participants gained hands-on experience in applying the SCALE framework to their specific contexts, developing tailored strategies for optimizing their services and maximizing their impact. The training also emphasized the importance of collaboration and peer learning, facilitating networking opportunities and creating a platform for knowledge sharing among participants. This collaborative approach strengthens the overall entrepreneurial ecosystem by fostering a supportive and interconnected network of ESOs and BDS providers.

A key outcome of this training initiative is the commitment by the Nigeria ESO Collaborative to support 100 SMEs over the next nine months. This targeted support will focus on inclusivity, with a specific emphasis on reaching marginalized groups. The collaborative aims to support 20 women-led enterprises, 20 businesses led by persons with disabilities, and 20 youth-run ventures, ensuring that impact-driven support reaches those who often face significant barriers to accessing resources and opportunities. This focus on inclusivity reflects a broader commitment to equitable economic development and recognizes the potential of diverse entrepreneurs to contribute to economic growth.

The IIF’s investment in capacity building for ESOs and BDS providers demonstrates a strategic approach to strengthening Nigeria’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. By equipping these organizations with the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver effective business support, the IIF is laying the groundwork for sustainable economic growth driven by a thriving and dynamic entrepreneurial sector. The focus on the Argidius SCALE framework provides a robust and globally recognized methodology for optimizing business support services, ensuring that Nigerian entrepreneurs receive high-quality guidance and support tailored to their specific needs. This initiative represents a significant step towards creating a more resilient and impactful entrepreneurial ecosystem in Nigeria, with the potential to unlock significant economic opportunities and drive positive social change.
