The Nigerian Federal Government has committed N777 billion to finalize the reconstruction of the critical 700-kilometer Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road, a project of significant economic and social importance. This substantial investment aims to complete the remaining 282 kilometers of the road, upgrading it to a concrete-reinforced pavement designed for enhanced durability and longevity. Originally awarded to Julius Berger in 2018 at a projected cost of N155.7 billion and a 36-month timeline, the project has faced substantial delays and cost escalations. After six years, less than half of the road had been completed, and the contractor’s revised cost estimate reached N1.5 trillion. The government subsequently revoked the initial contract, agreeing to pay only N740 billion, and has now re-awarded sections of the project.
The project has been divided into three sections. Section two, spanning 280 kilometers, has been awarded to Infiouest Construction Company for N525 billion with a 14-month completion deadline. Sections one and three, totaling 118 kilometers, have also been awarded to Infiouest for N252 billion, with an initial payment of 30% already disbursed. The government expressed confidence in Infiouest’s ability to deliver the project within the stipulated timeframe and to the required quality standards. The concrete reinforcement pavement, touted by the Works Minister, Engr. David Umahi, as superior and longer-lasting, is expected to significantly improve the road’s resilience and reduce maintenance needs over time.
Beyond simply completing the existing road, the project scope has been expanded to include an additional 11 kilometers extending to the Aminu Kano International Airport, further enhancing connectivity and accessibility.
