The University of Liberia (UL) Fendall campus in Louisiana, Montserrado County, has received a significant boost to its security and learning environment with the installation of 85 solar-powered lights, a generous donation from the University of Liberia Alumni Association in the Americas (ULIBAAA). This “Light Up Fendall Project,” specifically named the Calvin T. Duwye Light Up Project, represents a $24,085 investment by ULIBAAA and underscores the alumni association’s commitment to enhancing the safety and well-being of the university community. The project directly addresses long-standing concerns about inadequate lighting and security on campus, particularly along the walkway from the Pre-clinical Dormitory, a crucial area for students, especially those pursuing medical careers. The provision of reliable illumination will significantly improve visibility during evening hours, fostering a safer and more conducive atmosphere for studying, movement, and social interaction.

This initiative demonstrates the power of alumni engagement and the profound impact they can have on their alma mater. The project embodies the spirit of giving back and supporting the next generation of leaders and learners. ULIBAAA’s dedication extends beyond financial contributions, as members actively participated in assessing the campus lighting needs before organizing the donation. This hands-on approach highlights their commitment to ensuring the effective and responsible utilization of their contributions. The collaboration between ULIBAAA and the university administration showcases a shared vision for improving the campus environment and creating a more secure and enriching experience for all members of the UL community.

The turning-over ceremony, held on June 5, 2025, at the Fendall campus, served as a testament to the strong bond between the alumni and the university. Dr. Rudolph M. Bropleh, representing ULIBAAA National President Dr. Fatima Greaves-Kwekwe, officially presented the completed project to the university administration. Dr. Greaves-Kwekwe’s statement emphasized the project’s aim to address safety concerns and enhance the overall campus environment. The symbolic lighting of the pathway signifies not only improved security but also the illumination of opportunities for students and the brighter future that adequate lighting represents for the university.

The project’s success was further amplified by the generous contribution of $6,300 from Mr. Albert Forh and Power Solutions, Inc. Their partnership with ULIBAAA was instrumental in realizing the vision of a safer and more illuminated campus. The collective effort demonstrates the impact that can be achieved through collaboration and shared commitment to improving educational institutions. The “Light Up Fendall Project” serves as a shining example of how alumni, in partnership with private sector entities, can contribute meaningfully to their alma mater’s growth and development.

University of Liberia President, Prof. Dr. Layli Maparyan, expressed deep gratitude for the donation, emphasizing that it goes beyond mere equipment. She described it as a symbol of the enduring connection between the alumni and the university, reflecting their dedication to fostering a positive and secure learning environment for current and future students. Dr. Maparyan highlighted the alumni’s proactive involvement, noting their site visit to assess the campus lighting needs before organizing the donation. This meticulous approach further underscores their commitment to ensuring the project’s effectiveness and relevance to the university’s requirements.

Dr. Agnes Reeves-Taylor, UL Vice President for Academic Affairs, praised ULIBAAA’s efforts, emphasizing the transformative impact of bringing light to a previously dark area of the campus. She urged other alumni to follow this inspiring example and contribute to the university that played a foundational role in their success. The “Light Up Fendall Project” serves as a powerful call to action for all alumni to engage with their alma mater and support its continued growth and development. This initiative highlights the significant difference that alumni contributions can make in enhancing the university experience and creating a more secure and conducive environment for learning and personal growth. The project’s impact extends beyond the immediate benefits of improved lighting, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility for the university’s well-being.
