The Accra Timber Market, located near Ayalolo School, was the scene of a devastating fire in the early hours of Saturday, September 13, 2025. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly to the emergency call received at 1:17 a.m., dispatching the first team of firefighters within just four minutes. The rapid response was crucial in containing the inferno and preventing further damage to surrounding structures. The fire, which engulfed numerous shops containing wooden planks and hardware materials, posed a significant threat to the adjacent Ayalolo cluster of Schools. However, the diligent efforts of the firefighters successfully protected the school buildings from harm.

A substantial firefighting force was deployed to tackle the blaze. Seven fire engines from strategically located stations across Accra, including Accra City, Accra Regional Headquarters Substation, Ministries, Circle, National Headquarters, Abelemkpe, and Legon, were mobilized. This extensive deployment ensured ample resources were available to combat the intense flames. Further support was provided by a GNFS water tanker and two additional tankers from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and Ablekuma Municipal Assembly. The combined water capacity of these tankers proved essential in dousing the flames and bringing the fire under control.

The firefighters battled the inferno for hours, working tirelessly to contain its spread and protect surrounding properties. Despite the challenging conditions, they successfully extinguished the fire, preventing further devastation. Regrettably, two firefighters sustained injuries during the operation: one suffered an electric shock, while the other endured burns to the left arm. Both officers received prompt medical attention and were subsequently discharged, a testament to the on-site medical preparedness and the resilience of the firefighters.

The fire resulted in significant damage to the timber market, with several shops dealing in wooden planks and hardware materials completely destroyed. The loss of property and livelihoods represents a considerable setback for the affected traders. However, the rapid response and coordinated efforts of the GNFS prevented a greater catastrophe. The Ayalolo cluster of Schools, located in close proximity to the market, was spared from damage, safeguarding the educational environment for the students.

Senior GNFS officials were present at the scene to oversee the operation and provide support to the firefighting teams. Acting Chief Fire Officer, Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong, along with Deputy Director of Operations, ACFO II Osmond Anum, and Greater Accra Regional Commander, ACFO II Rashid Kwame Nisawu, were among the senior officers who ensured effective coordination and resource management throughout the incident. Their presence underscores the seriousness with which the GNFS addressed the emergency.

Following the successful containment of the fire, the GNFS has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the blaze. Understanding the origin of the fire is vital for implementing preventative measures and minimizing the risk of similar incidents in the future. The GNFS expressed gratitude to partner agencies for their invaluable support during the operation, highlighting the importance of inter-agency cooperation in effectively managing large-scale emergencies. The incident serves as a reminder of the crucial role of the fire service in protecting lives and property, and the bravery and dedication of firefighters who risk their own safety to serve their communities.
