Assistant Station Officer (ASO) Ofori Collins, the Hohoe Municipal Fire Safety Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has emphasized the critical importance of safe handling of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, to prevent fire outbreaks. In a sensitization forum held at the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Hohoe, ASO Ofori addressed a range of safety concerns, urging the public to adopt responsible practices to mitigate the risks associated with LPG usage.

One of the key concerns highlighted by ASO Ofori was the dangerous practice of recycling rusty gas cylinders by repainting them. He cautioned that repainting merely conceals the deteriorated condition of the cylinder without addressing the underlying structural damage. Rust weakens the integrity of the cylinder, making it susceptible to leaks and potential explosions. Therefore, repainting provides a false sense of security and does not restore the cylinder to a safe operating condition. Instead of repainting old cylinders, the public should prioritize replacing them with new, certified cylinders from reputable suppliers. This ensures the integrity of the container and significantly reduces the risk of accidents.

Furthermore, ASO Ofori warned against overfilling gas cylinders. He emphasized that gas attendants are trained to fill cylinders to the appropriate level, and consumers should refrain from exceeding the recommended capacity. Overfilling creates excessive pressure within the cylinder, increasing the likelihood of leaks and explosions. Adhering to the prescribed filling limits ensures a safe pressure level within the cylinder, reducing the risk of accidents. Consumers should trust the expertise of the gas attendants and avoid requesting overfilling, prioritizing safety over maximizing fill volume.

ASO Ofori also addressed the common but dangerous practice of placing stones on gas cylinder regulators. This practice can damage the regulator and compromise its functionality, leading to gas leaks and potential fires. He stressed the importance of replacing faulty regulators promptly instead of resorting to makeshift solutions. Regular inspection of regulators and timely replacement are crucial for maintaining a safe gas system. Any signs of damage or malfunction warrant immediate replacement with a certified regulator.

ASO Ofori attributed many fire outbreaks to human error, particularly multitasking and forgetfulness. He advised against engaging in multiple activities while cooking or using appliances, as distractions can lead to unattended stoves or electrical equipment, increasing the risk of fire. Focusing on one task at a time, especially when dealing with potentially hazardous appliances, minimizes the chances of accidents. He also advocated for a proactive approach to fire prevention by urging individuals to turn off all electrical appliances before leaving their homes, regardless of the duration of their absence. This simple precaution can prevent electrical fires caused by power surges or faulty wiring.

Underscoring the importance of prioritizing safety and security, ASO Ofori pointed out that the majority of fire outbreaks in the country are preventable. He emphasized that proactive measures and responsible behavior can significantly reduce the incidence of fires. He also reminded the public to contact the Fire Service immediately in case of accidents, highlighting their crucial role as first responders. ASO Ofori concluded his message by reinforcing the concept of shared responsibility for safety, urging individuals and communities to work together to create a safer environment for everyone. By adhering to safety guidelines, remaining vigilant, and promptly addressing potential hazards, individuals can contribute significantly to fire prevention and community safety.

The key takeaways from ASO Ofori’s message are the need for vigilance, proactive measures, and responsible behavior when handling LPG and electrical appliances. Replacing rusty cylinders, avoiding overfilling, maintaining regulators, and focusing on single tasks while cooking are crucial for preventing fire outbreaks. Turning off appliances before leaving home and promptly contacting the Fire Service in case of accidents are also essential for minimizing risks. By adopting these safety practices, individuals can contribute to a safer environment for themselves and their communities.
