The theme, “GHANASCO at 65: A Legacy of Excellence Inspiring Future Generations,” aptly encapsulates the school’s enduring impact on Ghanaian society. The event was graced by the presence of First Lady Lordina Mahama, who lauded the school’s consistent production of influential figures across various sectors. She highlighted notable alumni, including football legends Abedi Pele and Kwame Ayew, former Stanbic Bank MD Alhaji Alhassan Andani, former Minister for Business Development Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Awal, and Prof. Bashiru Imoro Saeed, Vice-Chancellor of Tamale Technical University. Adding a personal touch, Mrs. Mahama proudly acknowledged her husband, President John Dramani Mahama, as an alumnus, emphasizing the formative role GHANASCO played in shaping his values and leadership trajectory. She fondly recalled GHANASCO as the place where their paths first crossed, a memory that further strengthens her connection to the school.
The anniversary celebration served as a platform to reaffirm the government’s unwavering commitment to educational advancement. Mrs. Mahama underscored the government’s focus on infrastructure development, teacher training, and the expansion of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) through the Mahama Cares initiative. She called for collaborative efforts from all stakeholders, including educators, alumni, and traditional authorities, to safeguard and further enrich GHANASCO’s legacy. Minister of Education and Tamale South MP Haruna Iddrisu announced the impending construction of a new administration block within 90 days, with the possibility of a new dormitory as well. He also revealed the donation of 100 dual desks by the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, addressing the school’s furniture needs. In an effort to strengthen alumni engagement, the Minister announced plans to establish an alumni desk at the Ministry of Education, facilitating closer collaboration between alumni and their alma mater. Recognizing the importance of discipline, he empowered school authorities to enforce stricter measures, including random searches and dismissal of students who violate the school’s core values.
The headmaster, Mr. Douglas Haruna Yakubu, seized the opportunity to appeal for critical infrastructure improvements, including a new library, completion of the perimeter wall, and enhanced toilet facilities. He expressed gratitude for the government’s ongoing support and hoped for continued collaboration to create a more conducive learning environment. Further pledges of support came from other government officials. Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor assured the school community of the imminent installation of a new electricity transformer and solar-powered streetlights to improve campus lighting and safety. He also announced plans for the construction of an AstroTurf pitch, a joint project with the President aimed at enhancing the school’s sporting facilities. Deputy Roads Minister Alhassan Suhuyini committed to completing the school’s internal road network, a development expected to significantly improve mobility and accessibility within the campus.
