Professor Adegbenga Onabamiro, a distinguished psychologist at Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ogun State, has issued a clarion call to Nigerians, urging them to embrace a lifestyle characterized by modesty, frugality, and resourcefulness as a means of navigating the prevailing economic challenges. He emphasized the importance of curtailing non-essential expenditures, exploring avenues for recycling and reuse, and seeking alternative income sources to mitigate the financial strain. Furthermore, he underscored the potential health risks associated with economic hardship, such as elevated blood pressure, which, if left unmanaged, could escalate to more severe conditions like heart failure, heart attacks, and even death. Despite the prevailing difficulties, Professor Onabamiro encouraged Nigerians to maintain a hopeful outlook, assuring them that “there is always light at the end of a dark tunnel.”

Addressing the government’s role in mitigating the impact of the economic downturn, Professor Onabamiro advocated for a comprehensive review of existing economic policies, characterizing them as increasingly unbearable and detrimental to the well-being of the citizenry. He stressed the need for increased investment in mental health services, highlighting the importance of enhanced access to counseling and the training of more mental health professionals. Professor Onabamiro argued that such investments would yield positive returns for individuals, communities, and society as a whole. He further emphasized the crucial role of policy interventions that support mental health in various spheres of life, including education, workplaces, and communities. Such policies, he posited, would contribute to reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues while promoting overall well-being.

Professor Onabamiro’s address, delivered during the 30th inaugural lecture of the university, themed “From Tangled Web of Life to Clear Path: Counselling Psychologist as a Compass,” offered insightful guidance on navigating the complexities of life, particularly in the face of economic adversity. He underscored the importance of seeking professional counseling for couples grappling with marital challenges, whether stemming from childlessness or other conflicts. He emphasized the crucial roles of communication, empathy, and understanding in fostering strong and resilient relationships. Furthermore, he stressed the foundational importance of truth, honesty, and fidelity in building a healthy and enduring marriage.

In his address, Professor Onabamiro also extended his advice to students, cautioning them against neglecting their studies in pursuit of shortcuts to success. He admonished them to prioritize hard work and diligence during their formative years, warning against choosing comfort over labor, lest they be forced to labor during their later years when comfort is desired. This counsel serves as a reminder of the importance of investing in one’s education and skill development as a foundation for future success and well-being.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Oluwole Banjo, commended Professor Onabamiro for his significant contributions to the field of Counseling Psychology and the overall development of the institution. This recognition highlights the esteemed position Professor Onabamiro holds within the academic community and his dedication to advancing the field of psychology. The inaugural lecture attracted a diverse audience of prominent figures, including former Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, and a former Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Victor Olusegun Awonusi, further underscoring the significance of the event.

The presence of traditional rulers, clergymen, and professional colleagues among the attendees reflects the broad reach of Professor Onabamiro’s message and the recognition of its relevance to various segments of society. The inaugural lecture served as a platform for disseminating valuable insights on navigating the challenges of life, particularly in the context of economic hardship, and underscored the importance of investing in mental health resources and fostering strong relationships. Professor Onabamiro’s call for modesty, frugality, and resourcefulness resonates deeply in the current economic climate, offering practical guidance for individuals and families seeking to weather the storm and emerge stronger. His emphasis on seeking professional counseling for marital and personal challenges further reinforces the importance of mental health support in promoting overall well-being.
