In a significant stride against escalating banditry and criminal activities, the Kebbi State Police Command successfully apprehended five individuals suspected of conspiring to aid and abet banditry through the procurement and supply of motorcycles. This operation, hailed as a “major breakthrough,” unfolded on September 18, 2025, within the jurisdiction of Kamba Division, Dandi Local Government Area. A joint patrol team composed of police officers and vigilante members, spearheaded by the Divisional Police Officer, SP Bello Mohd Lawal, executed the arrests. The operation underscores the growing collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local communities in tackling the pervasive security challenges plaguing the region. The arrests and subsequent investigations have revealed a complex network involved in facilitating the movement and operations of bandit groups.

The initial phase of the operation resulted in the apprehension of four suspects: Saifullahi Suleiman (37), Halidu Adamu (26), Ibrahim Abubakar (37), and Sani Kabiru (22), all residents of Kamba town. These individuals were found in possession of three Honda motorcycles, commonly known as “Boko Haram motorcycles,” due to their frequent use by bandit groups. The estimated value of the seized motorcycles is N5.4 million, indicating a substantial investment in equipping the criminal elements. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the motorcycles were procured from the Benin Republic and destined for the Lakurawa terrorist group operating within the region. The intended delivery point was Kangiwa town in Arewa Local Government Area, suggesting a well-established supply chain supporting the banditry operations.

Further investigations revealed a deeper layer of corruption and attempts to obstruct justice. During the processing of the initial arrests, another suspect, Mubarak Ladan (28), also a resident of Kamba town, allegedly attempted to bribe the Divisional Police Officer, SP Bello Mohd Lawal, with the sum of N600,000. This brazen act, aimed at securing the release of the four initially arrested suspects, was swiftly countered by the DPO, leading to Ladan’s immediate apprehension. The bribe money was confiscated as evidence, solidifying the charges against him and further highlighting the lengths to which individuals are willing to go to protect the criminal networks. This incident underscores the persistent challenge of corruption within the system and the crucial need for vigilance and integrity within law enforcement agencies.

The successful operation and subsequent revelations have prompted the Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, to direct the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Birnin Kebbi to escalate their efforts in pursuing other individuals suspected of involvement in this network. The directive emphasizes the commitment of the police command to dismantle the intricate criminal web that fuels banditry and associated crimes in the state. The focus on inter-agency collaboration and the utilization of intelligence-led policing are key aspects of this strategy. The pursuit of other suspects underscores the understanding that these arrests represent a crucial breakthrough, but only a part of a larger network needs to be dismantled.

The Commissioner of Police commended the professionalism and courage displayed by the DPO of Kamba Division and the local vigilante members who played a critical role in the operation’s success. This recognition highlights the importance of community engagement and collaboration in combating crime and maintaining security. The commissioner’s commendation serves as encouragement for other divisions to replicate this proactive approach, emphasizing community partnership and swift action in addressing security threats. It reinforces the importance of local intelligence and the vigilance of community members in aiding law enforcement efforts.

Beyond the immediate arrests and ongoing investigations, CP Sani appealed to the residents of Kebbi State to maintain their cooperation with the police by providing credible information. Such intelligence plays a vital role in preemptive measures and facilitates timely interventions to prevent criminal activities. This appeal reinforces the shared responsibility in maintaining a secure environment, emphasizing the crucial role that community intelligence plays in effective policing. Public cooperation is paramount in creating a safer environment for all residents, and the continued flow of information will further support the police in their fight against crime. By working together, law enforcement and communities can create a robust defense against criminality, ensuring lasting peace and security within Kebbi State.
