The centerpiece of IBPLC’s road safety initiative is the donation of 1,000 reflective jackets and the installation of 35 cautionary road signs across major highways in Nigeria. These tangible interventions are designed to enhance road user visibility, particularly during nighttime and inclement weather conditions, and to provide clear warnings to drivers about potential hazards. The reflective jackets are especially crucial for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcycle riders, who are often disproportionately affected by road accidents. By increasing their visibility to motorists, the jackets significantly reduce the risk of collisions. Recognizing that effective road safety requires a collaborative approach, IBPLC has forged strategic partnerships with key stakeholders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the primary government agency responsible for road safety management in Nigeria, and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), a major transport union representing commercial drivers. The collaboration with the FRSC ensures that the initiative aligns with national road safety strategies and leverages the expertise and enforcement capabilities of the agency. The partnership with the NURTW, on the other hand, provides a direct channel for engaging with commercial drivers, a crucial demographic in road safety efforts, to promote safe driving practices and raise awareness about the dangers of risky behaviors such as speeding, drunk driving, and distracted driving.

The partnership with the FRSC has been particularly impactful, with the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Kehinde Hamzat, lauding IBPLC and the AB InBev Foundation for their valuable contribution to road safety. The collaboration with NURTW has also yielded positive results, with drivers like Olufemi Akanbi expressing appreciation for the initiative and highlighting the effectiveness of the cautionary signage in promoting responsible driving behaviors.

IBPLC’s commitment to data-driven decision-making is evident in its use of statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) to track the impact of its road safety interventions. The NBS data indicates a decline in road accident figures and fatalities between 2020 and 2024, suggesting that the ongoing efforts by IBPLC and the FRSC are making a positive difference. While acknowledging that road safety is a complex issue with multiple contributing factors, IBPLC attributes this downward trend, at least in part, to the sustained efforts of various stakeholders, including its own initiative, to improve road safety in Nigeria.
