Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, inaugurated the newly constructed Eze Oha Apara Palace in Rumuigbo, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, a testament to his commitment to inclusive governance and the recognition of traditional institutions. The palace, built for Eze Worlu-Wodo, the Paramount Ruler of Ekinigbo and Eze Oha Apara IV, also serves as the seat of the chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers. Governor Fubara emphasized his belief in equitable distribution of resources, stating that he would not exclude any community from development based on political differences. He reiterated his commitment to using peaceful means, including “Artificial Intelligence methods,” to resolve conflicts and address the needs of all Rivers State residents. The event was marked by the conferment of a traditional title, Enwa Gbaga Nu Ohna (The moon that shines in Ikwerre land), upon Governor Fubara by prominent Ikwerre traditional rulers.

The Governor’s decision to construct the palace in Obio/Akpor, despite facing political opposition from some leaders in the area, underscores his dedication to prioritizing the welfare of all citizens. He clarified that the project was funded by state resources and intended for the betterment of the entire state, not just a select few. He appealed to the community to reciprocate this gesture through continued support for his administration and by maintaining law and order. He emphasized the importance of peaceful conflict resolution, advocating for dialogue and strategic approaches over confrontational tactics. The palace itself symbolizes the respect accorded to traditional rulers in Rivers State, providing a befitting venue for official functions and interactions with dignitaries from other states.

Governor Fubara drew parallels with the impressive palaces of traditional rulers in other states, highlighting the need to elevate the status and image of traditional institutions in Rivers State. The construction of the palace, he explained, aimed to provide a comparable platform for the state’s traditional rulers to host their peers and conduct official business. The Governor further announced other development projects underway in Obio/Akpor, including an ultra-modern General Hospital, the first of its kind in the area, and an upgraded Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital to address mental health challenges. He also revealed plans to inaugurate a similar palace for the Akpor King in the near future, further demonstrating his commitment to the area’s development.

These initiatives, collectively, represent Governor Fubara’s multifaceted approach to governance, focusing on healthcare infrastructure, cultural preservation, and recognition of traditional authority. He pledged to continue addressing the socio-economic needs of the people, contingent upon their continued support for his administration. The Governor also urged the community to safeguard the newly inaugurated palace as a shared legacy for future generations. The palace complex, according to Senator John Mbata, Chairman of the Building Committee, includes a main palace with residential quarters, a large capacity people’s hall with meeting rooms, a VIP hall for the king’s daily activities, and a guest house for visitors. This extensive infrastructure reflects the significance of the palace as a hub for community affairs and traditional governance.

Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi-Otu V, the Obong of Calabar, who inaugurated the project, commended Governor Fubara for his support of traditional institutions, describing the palace as a tangible demonstration of the Governor’s respect and good intentions. He urged other political leaders to emulate Governor Fubara’s example and prioritize people-oriented projects. The Obong of Calabar also addressed the political climate in Rivers State, acknowledging the challenges faced by Governor Fubara. He affirmed Governor Fubara’s legitimate mandate as the duly elected governor, urging him to remain focused on delivering on his promises to the people despite political distractions. This endorsement from a prominent traditional ruler from a neighboring state adds weight to Governor Fubara’s position and reinforces the message of unity and stability.

The inauguration of the Eze Oha Apara Palace is more than just a construction project; it is a symbolic gesture, representing inclusive governance, respect for tradition, and a commitment to community development. Governor Fubara’s actions and pronouncements at the event send a clear message of his dedication to serving all citizens of Rivers State, regardless of political affiliations. The projects undertaken in Obio/Akpor demonstrate a holistic approach to development, encompassing infrastructure, healthcare, and cultural preservation. The Governor’s focus on peaceful conflict resolution and his emphasis on community support suggest a long-term vision for sustainable development and a harmonious relationship between the government and its people. The palace itself serves as a physical embodiment of these principles, a place where tradition meets modernity, and a symbol of the Governor’s commitment to the well-being of all Rivers State citizens.
